England top Centenary Shield table
Wales Schools 1-2 England Schools
Nathan Wood (33) George Lamb (40) Aaron Smith (84)
The fourth of the INSPIRESPORT CENTENARY SHIELD fixtures took place tonight (March 18) in The Book People Stadium, Bangor City FC with the English snatching a late winner to take three vital points in their Centenary Shield endeavours
This was the Welsh Schools opening game in their Centenary Shield campaign at home while England were away for the second consecutive game of the series. The visitors snatched a late winner in Northern Ireland a fortnight previously and it was another late winner courtesy of Aaron Smith who grabbed the headlines tonight six minutes from time.
Nathan Wood opened the scoring direct from a corner kick just after the half hour mark to ensure the hosts a slight advantage heading into the interval. However, English student George Lamb equalised five minutes from the break to ensure the deadlock remained.
Aaron Smith popped up six minutes from time with the match winner as a scramble following a set piece ensured his goal secured a vital three points for the English who sit top of the table on six points.
Scotland are next up for the English in Highbury Stadium on April 1 while the Republic of Ireland will face off against England a week later as The New Saints FC will facilitate the second home game for the table toppers.
Wales are away to Scotland next Thursday, March 24 in Harlow Park, Inverurie Local Works FC with a 7.30pm kick off.
