Shanahan hat trick wins Munster Final

UMBRO FAI Schools First Year Girls Munster Final

Blackwater Community School 4 - 0 St: Augustine’s College, Dungarvan

Blackwater Community School won the UMBRO FAI Schools First Year Girls Munster Final last Thursday (April 29) on a pristine Cappoquin FC pitch reports Michael Looby:

In an all West Waterford Munster Final the Lismore School defeated St: Augustines of Dungarvan on a score line of 4 goals to nil: While Blackwater CS were undoubtedly the better team, St: Augustines were well in the game up to half time and can feel very proud of their display: Both sides started nervously and took some time to settle down and play good football but when they did it was worth waiting for:

The opening score came when Avril Power set up Sinead Shanahan who made no mistake from 15 yards: A very well coached St: Augustines team were defending very well with Shannon O Brien playing particularly well: This 1/0 score line remained until half time:

Blackwater CS added a second when Lorraine Bray raced to the end line pulling the ball back and again Shanahan was on hand to finish to the net: Blackwater CS were now having their best spell  and were playing the ball around like champions but were still finding it difficult to penetrate a very organised  Augustines defence:

Shanahan completed her hat/trick with the goal of the game: Following a corner on the left, Elaine Looby set her up for a strike from twenty yards that nestled in the top corner of the net:

The scoring was complete when Looby scored one of her own: After beating two defenders she calmly slotted the ball low across the keeper into the corner of the goal:

Paul Cleary National Coordinator for Women’s Football presented the Cup to Joint Captains Jessica Glavin and Elaine Looby: Paul spoke on the bright future for the girls’ game in Ireland following the heroic efforts of the nation U17 FAI squad and U15 Schools squad and the clear pathway to international football that exists for these young girls: He also complemented both teams and mentors on a marvellous display and wished them the best in the future:

The captains spoke (partly as Gaelige) and thanked all that made the occasion happen especially Cappoquin FC for the facilities and of course the teachers and coaches of both squads Mr David King, Mr Eamonn Cashin and West Waterford FAI Development Officer Michael Looby:
