A record number of 66 schools took part in the FAI Schools Tipperary 5-a-side Primary Schools competition
5 days of thrilling matches took place at the magnificent Borris/St: Kevin’s FC grounds at Newhill Park:
Section “A” Schools: 60 teams from 38 Schools took part in this section: 16 teams made it through to the finals day: The semi finals were very close encounters with Cloughjordan NS No2 coming out on top against Drom NS 3/2, Birdhill NS also came out on top against Grangemockler NS 3/2: Cloughjordan NS No2 came out on top in this competition they defeated Birdhill NS 4/0 in the Final:
Section “B” Schools: 38 teams from 20 schools took part in this section: 9 teams qualified for the finals day with Newport Boys NS coming out on top in the final against St: Colmcilles NS, Templmore 5/2:
Section “C” Schools: Monastery CBS advanced to the Minster Finals on May 11th: The Monastery CBS have won this competition for the last three years and will be hoping that this can be their year when they travel to Cork for the Munster Finals: They played well throughout the day and deservedly qualified for the finals:
Section “A” Girls Schools: 33 teams from 24 Schools took part in this category: This section was very competitive with a number of the Tipperary Emerging Talent League Centre players taking part: The section has seen a huge increase in teams in the last two years: Scoil Eoin Naofa last year’s champions once again came out on top this year, they didn’t have it all their own way and were pushed all the way by Gaelscoil Bhride, Thurles eventually winning 4/3 with a golden goal in the last minute of extra time:
Section “B” Girls Schools: 9 teams competed in this category, with a group of 4 and a group of 5, with each team playing each other on a round robin basis with the top teams in each group qualifying for the final: Another set of closely fought matches were viewed by the large crowd in attendance: St: Mary’s Convent, Nenagh, Munster Champions in 2009 qualified from group 1, with Sisters of Charity, Clonmel topping group 2: Both Schools looked very strong with Sister of Charity winning the final 2/0 enough to see them progress on to Munster Finals in Cork:
FAI Development Officers for Tipperary David Lenane and James Scott would like to say a big thanks to Borris/St: Kevin’s FC for providing us with their magnificent facility for 5 days: We would also like to thank Colaiste Mhuire Co: Ed Thurles, Borrisokane Community College and the High School CBS Clonmel for supplying us with students to referee the games and members of local clubs who also assisted us throughout the week: Thanks also to Adam Coghlan, a work placement student from WIT who undertook a lot of work in the organisation of this tournament: Finally, thanks to all the schools for participating and all the teachers and parents who travelled with their team throughout the week: Best of luck to all the schools who qualified for the Munster Finals which will be held on 11 May, 2011, in Corinthian Park, Castletreasure, Douglas, Co: Cork
