An Post FAI Schools 5-a-side Munster Finals

Five Counties share the Provincial spoils

The magnificent MOUNTHAWK PARK, TRALEE was the setting for the Munster Provincial Finals of the An Post FAI Schools 5-a-side competition yesterday (May 16)

The event saw over 15,400 children participate last year: The competition has been running since the mid 1990’s, the event is more popular than ever with 954 schools involved in 2011

The FAI Schools 5-a-side is the biggest and best competition in the 2012 Primary Schools Soccer Calendar: There are 5 divisions to suit all school sizes: While FAI Schools and An Post encourage boys and girls to play on the same team, there is also a separate competition for girls’ schools: A number of teams can represent one school depending on the size of their student body, giving more children the chance to develop their skills in a safe, child centered and exciting environment:

Thirty Schools from Waterford, Kerry, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Clare competed for Provincial honours in an enjoyable outing for all the participating Schools: There was a mix of fortunes for some of the Counties as all bar hosts Kerry came away with Provincial glory: Clare, Tipperary, Cork, Waterford and Limerick all sealed first place finishes while Limerick received three runners up slots leaving Cork and Waterford also collecting silver medals in their respective sections:

The “A” Cup section was so close that it came down to the wire to decide the winner: Clare’s Annagh NS just nudged it 2/1 against a spirited St: Fergus’ Glin, Limerick who were outstanding throughout the day’s activities:

Annagh NS had a splendid run of form defeating Scoil Naomh Seasamh (Laragh NS) in the semi final fixture 3/2: St: Fergus had a tougher contest against Tipperary’s Rathkeevin NS with the Limerick side claiming a 2/1 victory:

The finale lived up to expectations and golden goal ensured Annagh’s route to the All Ireland series next month: There will be plenty of fire power on display in Tallaght as the banner boys netted 12 times during the course of the day:

The “B” Cup section was enthralling as several games in this group were too close to call: Glanmire failed to get out of the blocks but put on plenty of gutsy performances against St: Colmcille’s and Piltown NS in their opening games: Abbeyfeale were impressive as they slotted four past Spa NS and drew 2/2 with Knockanean:

The semi’s were showing a top class field as Piltown came up against Kerry’s Spa NS and defeated them narrowly while Abbeyfeale had a tussle with St: Colmcilles in another cracking decider: St: Colmcille’s edged that game 3/2 in the final moments of the match

Therefore Piltown NS came up against St: Colmcille’s NS in the Final: The Tipp side defeated Piltown 3/2 to lift the title this season and more importantly confirm another outing for the Tipperary School at National level

The large schools category in the “C” Cup saw St: Anthony’s NS advance to the Finals in Tallaght and thus ensure their wonderful record of All Ireland appearances: Kevin O’Sullivan’s side defeated Presentation Monastery CBS, Killarney 5/0 in their semi final and whipped runners up St: Nessan’s of Limerick in the Final to secure the Munster crown: A superior team on the day that left no doubt that the team are destined for greater glory

In earlier group deciders, Eoin Davies (2) and James O’Donovan netted for Corkian’s in their 3/2 win over St: Nessan’s: The Limerick goal scorers were Dylan Sheehan and Daniel Ryan:

St: Nessan’s met Presentation Monastery in their second outing and the Limerick lads made better work of it scrapping a 3/2 victory: Killarney’s Thando Dude and Kasper Malinowski supplied the goals while Limerick’s Eoghan Killian and Paul O’Brien (2) also registered excellent scores

St: Declan’s suffered a heavy defeat to the reigning Munster Champions St: Anthony’s in their first outing of the afternoon and unfortunately couldn’t convert their chances in the second game as they went down 4/3 to Nenagh CBS in an end to end battle

Ennis NS drew 1/1 with St: Nessan’s but suffered a major lose to Monastery in the next game going out 5/1 in the end

Monastery and Nenagh CBS qualified for the semi final places but St: Anthony’s were too strong for the host County defeating them 5/0 while St: Nessan enjoyed a 3/2 win over Nenagh CBS:

The Girls “A” Cup was captured by Waterford selection Piltown NS as Ballysteen NS in Limerick came a valiant runner up in an exciting contest: The Piltown girls were extremely good in the Final overcoming their rivals 4/0 while their semi final encounter produced six goals for the Waterford side against a determined St: Joseph’s of Miltown Malbay: Ballysteen had a more difficult task in their semi final bout as they eventually got over the line 3/2 against Scoil Mhuire na Trocaire, Buttevant to claim the honours: An wonderful achievement for the Ballysteen School with such a small number of pupils registered in the School:

Limerick’s Monaleen NS won the Girls “B” Cup overcoming St: Nioclás of Cork (2/1) in a very entertaining Final:

St: Ursula’s NS gave the Limerick side a fright as they took the game to the group toppers in the semi finals: Limerick remained in the driving seat to see them cross the line 4/3 and advance:

Meanwhile St: Nioclás had a comfortable 6/1 win over St: Aidan’s of Shannon in the other semi:

The Final was a tense affair for both schools involved, a place in the All Ireland series, up for grabs: The Monaleen team managed the win by the narrowest of margins 2/1 to book their spot in Tallaght:

Waterford’s St: Ursula’s finished the group in third position defeating a gallant St: Aidan’s by a solitary goal as the Shannon School had to settle for a fourth place finish: A good day’s outing for the schools involved:

In earlier group games St: Nioclás defeated Tipperary’s Sisters of Charity NS 4/2 and also continued their winning strike by defeating St: Ursula’s of Ballytruckle 3/2 in their second outing of the day:

Mercy Moyderwell were beaten by a hat/trick of goals when they faced the Limerick side: The Tralee School were outstanding in their County qualifier but found the pace a little too difficult at Provincial level

Many thanks to all thirty participating teams today who did extremely well in reaching this Provincial stage, unfortunately only one school from each section can progress to the next level

The five Provincial Finalists will now travel to the National Finals which will be held in Tallaght Stadium, Dublin on Tuesday, June 5
