Willie Moran Memorial Tournament, Waterford, May 21
Dear Colleagues,
I write to invite your school to take part in a brand new one/day soccer competition - the "Willie Moran Tournament":
As most of you will know, Willie Moran is the former Principal of Holy Cross NS in Tramore:
Prior to that he taught in Tramore CBS: He was involved in sport all his life: He founded the Waterford Primary Schools Football League (WPSFL):
He was a leading figure in Tramore AFC for most of his adult life: He was also very involved in the Schoolboys Football Association of Ireland and the INTO for many years
Please see the attached document for more on Willie Moran, kindly given to us by his great friend, Joe Cashin:
The committee of Tramore AFC approached the WPSFL about holding a soccer tournament to honour Willie Moran: The result is the "Willie Moran Tournament":/
This is a 7/a/side soccer tournament with a panel of 10 players:
It will take place in the Tramore AFC grounds, Graun Park, on Wednesday, May 21
It is essentially a tournament for boys but of course girls may play on teams from mixed schools:
There will be 32 school teams in the tournament in groups of 4:
When the group matches have been played the tournament will split into 3 competitions: The group winners will contest the 'Cup'; the runners up will contest the 'Plate'; the 3rd placed school team will contest the 'Bowl':
Assembly time on Wednesday 21st May will be 9:30; the matches will begin at 10:00; the finals will be played at 2:00 approx:
This is a brand new extra special tournament for schools organised jointly by WPSFL and Tramore AFC to honour the memory of a dear friend and colleague:
We hope that every school will be represented in this tournament: It will be a tremendous day of football so we strongly urge you not to miss it:
An official launch of the Willie Moran Tournament will take place on Tuesday 13th May in the Munster Bar at 4:30 pm: Please ensure that your school is represented by two or more teachers - all are welcome!
Yours in Sport
