St. Flannan’s College & High School Clonmel are crowned Munster Champions at Futsal Finals

Futsal is an indoor version of association football. It is played between two teams of five players, one of whom is the goalkeeper, and up to seven substitutes per team. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used.
Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regulation football. The rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.
The University of Limerick was the setting for the Munster First Year Futsal Finals.
The boys section was represented by High School Clonmel (Tipperary), Ennistymon CBS (Clare) De La Salle (Waterford), Colaiste Mhuire (Limerick) and Presentation Brothers (Cork).
Unfortunately, Killorglin Community College in Kerry was unable to participate in both the boys and girls event.
On duty for the girl’s were Presentation College (Tipperary), St. Flannan’s College (Clare), St. Augustine’s College (Waterford) and Colaiste Mhuire (Limerick).
The proceedings commenced with De La Salle kicking off against High School Clonmel in the boys section. This game proved to be a close encounter with High School Clonmel winning 3-2.
High School Clonmel had further victories over Ennistmon CBS and Colaiste Mhuire while drawing level with Presentation Cork.
De La Salle could not improve their performance and suffered further defeats against Ennistymon, Presentation and Colaiste Mhuire.
Colaiste Mhuire had a 2-0 win against Ennistymon and drew 2-2 with Presentation Cork.

As the points were tallied from the day’s events, the final saw Presentation Brothers Cork up against High School Clonmel.

The schools provided the ultimate finale with only a single goal coming for High School Clonmel in the second half proving the decider in this well matched encounter.

The girls section proved highly competitive with amass of goals scored throughout the day.

Presentation College had two victories against Colaiste Mhuire, two 1-1 draws against St. Augustine’s of Waterford and drew and lost against St. Flannan’s College in their double headers.

St. Flannan’s College, Ennis had six consecutive victories in the competition.

The girls from Ennis scored a total of 19 goals in the competition with the vital 20th goal coming in the final proving the crucial one in a closely fought win against a disappointed but remarkable Presentation College.

FAI Schools International stars, Ian Storan and Jason Hughes were on hand to present the trophies to St Flannan’s College of Ennis (girls) and High School Clonmel (boys).

Congratulations to all the schools involved and thanks to the FAI’s Regional Development Officers in organising such a well run event.
