Munster schools set for futsal showdown

Monday, November 21, 2016

The FAI Post Primary Schools First Year Boys & Girls Munster Finals will take place this Tuesday, November 22 at Waterford IT Sports Arena in Carriganore as proceedings get underway at 11am.

The competition caters for boys and girls in first year which delivers a quality fast paced action packed game focusing on skill, speed and technique.

144 students will take to the courts representing 12 schools in the provincial showdown. Last year saw Coláiste Dún Íascaigh, Cahir, Tipperary (GIRLS) win Munster. They progressed to Nationals and recorded a silver medal finish on the podium which was a wonderful achievement for the school. Ashton School, Cork (BOYS) captured the Munster title last season and came third in the National stage. These two sides were unfortunate not to progress from the County events this season so a new name will be etched on the Munster silverware come Tuesday afternoon.

The boys section will see an abundance of talent with St. Caimin’s CS, Shannon (Clare), St. Francis College, Rochestown (Cork), Intermediate School, Killorglin (Kerry), Scoil Mhuire agus Ide, Newcastle West (Limerick), St. Mary’s SS, Newport (Tipperary) and Ard Scoil na Mara, Tramore (Waterford) all in contention for the honours.

The girls section is looking equally as impressive with St. Joseph’s SS, Spanish Point (Clare), Midleton College (Cork), Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, Kenmare (Kerry), Thomond Community College (Limerick), Nenagh College (Tipperary) and St. Augustine College, Dungarvan (Waterford) all vowing for victory.

For further information on the event please contact the Provincial Co-ordinator Gary Power on 086 388 3850.

The Munster winners will progress to the National Finals which take place in Waterford IT Sports Arena on December 8. We wish all participating schools the very best of luck.

What is Futsal | Futsal is an indoor version of association football. It is played between two teams of five players, one of whom is the goalkeeper, and up to seven substitutes per team. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used.

Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regulation football. The rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.
