SPAR5s National titles claimed at Aviva Stadium

The SPAR FAI Primary School 5s programme for 2016 came to a pulsating conclusion in the Aviva Stadium, Dublin yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, May 11)

 

The ‘A’ Cup honours went to Scoil Choilmcille, Mount Hanover, Duleek, Meath who finished five points ahead of second placed Croom NS, Limerick with maximum points from all three games.

 

Player of the Tournament Alan Bowden hit all five goals as they powered past Munster Champions Croom in their opening game. While Bowden netted four more in their 5-3 win over Scoil An Choimin, Lifford to guarantee them top spot with a game still remaining.

 

Scoil Choilmcille then finished in style to come from a goal down in their final game against Carn NS, Gurteen, Sligo and claim a 2-1 win and the ‘A’ Cup honours.

 

The Girls ‘A’ Cup went to Ardnagrath NS, Athlone who edged out Thomastown NS, Tipperary by a single point in the final table.

 

In their opening game St. Joseph’s NS had shaded a tight first half to lead by 1-0 at the break with the goal coming direct from Lucy Tierney’s corner kick.  Maria Farrell levelled for Ardnagrath as they hit back midway into the second half to give them a point. 

 

Two goals in either half saw Ardnagrath claim a convincing 4-0 win over Cavan’s Scoil Mhuire, Lacken in their second outing with the goals coming from Orlaith Craven, Holly Keenan, Maria Farrell and Bea Drummond.

 

While in a thrilling finale they edged out Thomastown 3-2 to take the honours.

 

The Athlone side needed a win in their final game to top the section while a draw would have been enough for Thomastown to win out. A last minute strike from Bea Drummond gave Ardnagrath the victory after two earlier goals from Maria Farrell and one each from Thomastown’s Kate Flannery and Fiona Tuohy had left the side’s level going into the final minutes.

 

The Tipp ladies at Thomastown NS had cause for celebration when the talented Emer McCarthy was announced as Player of the Tournament for that category.

 

The ‘B’ Cup was claimed by Killeeneen NS, Craughwell, Galway who came from a goal down to beat Dean Kelly NS, Athlone 3-1 in their opening fixture.

 

Sam O’Neill then hit a hat-trick to follow up an earlier Adam O’Neill opener as they accounted Gaelscoil Bhríde, Durlas Éile of Tipperary 4-1 in their second game.

 

Killeeneen completed a successful day with a 4-2 win over St. Michael’s NS, Cootehill to finish top of the section two points ahead of second placed Gaelscoil Bhríde Durlas Éile.

Young starlet Darragh Stáicliúm, Gaelscoil Bhríde, Durlas Éile, Tipperary was up at the winners podium when he was announced as Player of the Tournament. A worthy recipient with his outstanding display all afternoon for his School.

 

The Girls ‘B’ Cup was won by Dromtrasna NS, Abbeyfeale, Limerick after they finished a point in front of Claregalway NS despite suffering a heavy 5-0 defeat to the Galway side earlier in the competition.

 

The Player of the Tournament was issued to Kate Slevin, Claregalway NS, Galway, the youngster was on top form for the runners up in this exciting grouping.

 

Dunboyne Senior Primary School came out on top in the ‘C’ Cup with a better goal difference over St. Patrick’s NS, Lombard St. of Galway after both sides had finished on seven points from three games. It was a pulsating section which went down to the wire.

 

Edric Opoku, St. Patrick’s BNS, Lombard Street, Galway has cause for celebration when he was called up to collect his Player of the Tournament accolade, a marvellous achievement for this top class footballer

 

While St. Fiacc’s NS ,Graiguecullen, Carlow took the Girls ‘C’ Cup title with maximum points from their three games to finish three points ahead of Scoil Chaitríona, Renmore.

 

The impressive Emilia Koziel, Scoil Chaitríona, Renmore, Galway was crowned Player of the Tournament in this category.

Five goals from Scoil Choilmcille’s Alan Bowden was the highlight of this thrilling game. Croom recovered from a nervous start to level at 2-2 with the goals coming from Cian Fitzgerald but Choilmcille’s proved the stronger after that coming away with a 5-2 victory.

Dylan Walsh had Carn in front with an early goal but Scoil An Choimín recovered in fine style to equalise through Luke Mag Fhloinn.

Alan Bowden was the star of the show with four of the goals to give Scoil Choilmcille all three points and put them into an unbeatable position to claim the ‘A’ Cup honours with a game still to play. Conor McQuail Leech added the fifth Choilmcille’s goal while Luke Mag Fhloinn, Daniel O’Meartrhaire and Ross O’Brollachain were the Scoil An Choimin scorers.

Leon Kirrane inspired Croom to a comfortable 4-1 win over Carn NS. Jake O’Connell grabbed two goals and Cian Fitzgerald and Kirrane completed the total while the hard working Dylan Walsh was the Carn goal scorer.

Scoil Choilmcille came from a goal down against Carn NS to claim the win and the ‘A’ Cup honours. Dylan Walsh was on hand for the Sligo lads to slot home but it wasn’t enough to keep the Meath men at bay.

Cian Fitzgerald was excellent in this encounter, dribbling past two defenders to score a brace for Croom. His colleague Leon Kirrane was on fire too with a double for the Limerick lads. The Lifford starlet Luke Mag Fhloinn was a whirlwind with four goals for his side in a pulsating tie.

A last minute goal from Darragh Stáicliúm gave Gaelscoil Bhríde a narrow win. Danny O’Treasaigh put them into an early lead and Stáicliúm added a second before Christian Hennessy pulled a goal back for St. Michael’s by the break. Senan Mullen equalised in the second half and the game looked like ending in draw until Stáicliúm hit the late winner.

Sandro Da Costa had Dean Kelly NS in front before Alex Haugh headed Killeeneen level to set up a grand stand finish that saw Killeeneen pull away to secure the win with goals from a Dara Sheeran penalty and Adam White.

St. Michael’s just managed to get past Dean Kelly NS by the odd goal in seven. Christian Hennessy, Callum O’Reilly, Kian Cooper and Senan Mullen were on target for the Cootehill side while two goals from Sandro Da Costa and a Brooklyn Lowsbridge strike made up the Dean Kelly total.

St Fiacc’s proved the stronger side and ran out comfortable 5-0 winners over out of luck Scoil Chaitriona with the goals coming from Kate McDonald (2), Kelly O’Neill, Grace Cullen and Emma Walker.

Scoil Chaitriona’s Emila Koziel had a major influence on the game as her side managed to edge out Scoil Nioclais on 4-3 score-line. Koziel netted two of their goals and Ella Gilmore added two more as the Galway side finished on top. Meabh Twohig, Katie McCarthy and Abbey Murphy netted for Scoil Nioclais.

St. Fiacc’s win guarantees them the Girls ‘C’ Cup honours with a game still to play. Scoil Iosagain went ahead through a Jodie Loughrey early goal but the Carlow side responded in fine style to power in front with two goals from Emma Walker and one from Kelly O’Neill to claim all three points.
