PRESENTATIONS BROTHERS COLLEGE, CORK secured their place in the Bank of Ireland FAI Schools Dr. Tony O’Neill National Senior Cup Final following a solid second half performance against a resolute Presentation College, Athenry in the University of Limerick this afternoon.
The Connacht Champions held their own in the first period and the heroics of Cork goalkeeper Owen O’Sullivan ensured a scoreless 45 in what was an edgy affair.
The contest came to life 13 minutes into the second half as David Grant O’Sullivan played a beautifully weighted ball into the box to Eoin Davis, the youngster’s neat back flick saw Seán Mooney get a glove to deflect the effort on goal but the ball fell to the feet of the lively Douwie Van Sideren who converted at the far post.
Two minutes later Cork’s lead was doubled as Van Sinderen saw his splendid effort sail past Mooney in goal.
A brilliantly executed set piece saw Mark Cunningham’s header on 72 minutes ruled off side.
Ryan Shaughnessy had a shot from distance but O’Sullivan was equal to the challenge with 15 minutes to play. A platter of set pieces were well executed but unfortunately for Athenry they couldn’t convert.
Captain David Grant O’Sullivan put the contest out of Athenry’s reach when he converted for the Cork side with 12 minutes remaining.
Aiden Twomey’s side will await the winners of the other semi-final which is scheduled for Thursday at 1pm in The Peace Link, Clones as newcomers Arklow CBS face off against Carndonagh Community School in which should prove a pulsating tie.
