Wexford CBS 1-0 Abbey Vocational School, Donegal Town

Charlie Mullan (39)

WEXFORD CBS saw off the threat posed by Ulster side Abbey Vocational School of Donegal Town in Oriel Park, Dundalk this afternoon (Thursday, March 13).

The victory secured by the narrowest of margins as a solitary goal courtesy of Charlie MULLAN on the stroke of half-time was the difference on the day.

Abbey defended well in the early exchanges with Ryan Mahon clearing off the line to deny Alex Norval’s opportunity on 16 minutes while seconds later keeper Thomas O’Donoghue had to be alert to get down well to save from Darragh Buttle’s excellent attempt.

While Danny Piero Doyle saw his effort stopped by O’Donoghue just short of the half hour mark.

With five minutes of the first period remaining Niko Domtnzk drilled the ball low to the goal but Wexford shot-stopper Cormac White did well to smother the chance.

The crucial moment of the game came just before the break with Danny Piero Doyle  playing a delightful ball over the top for Charlie MULLAN to work his magic and slot home from close range.

The Wexford side enjoying that one goal cushion at half-time.

Abbey scholar Jack Bennett had a great opportunity to draw his side level as he got past his man but his strike on target saw the ball sail over the upright just minutes after the re-start.

Josh Cullen was impressive for the Ulster Champions but the gallant efforts of Domtnzk and Healy couldn’t produce any real threat for White. The #BokerBoys defended admirably and kept a clean sheet to advance to this season’s Cup decider.

Wexford CBS will now face Presentation College, Athenry in the FAI Schools Tom Ticher National Junior Cup Final which will take place on Wednesday, March 26 (1-0), venue to be decided.
