The An Post FAI Schools Cork 5-a-side competition was held in the impressive Turners Cross on Wednesday, April 25 and Thursday, April 26 with five schools progressing to the provincial deciders next month:
Earlier preliminary rounds had already taken place at various locations across the County to cater for the huge amount of schools participating: The final two days saw 16 schools contest the Munster title in their specific categories depending on their school size:
Scoil Iosagain Aghada, Ballyheada NS, Ballinhassig, Knockskeagh NS Clonakilty, Scoil Mhuire Trocaire, Buttevant all competed in the Girls “A” Schools section: Following an intense few matches, Buttevant overcame the charges of Aghada to take the prestigious Cup:
The Girls “B” schools included Scoil Barra, Ballincollig, Scoil Nioclais, Frankfield, St: Joseph's, Riverstown and St: Mary’s on the Hill, Knocknaheeny: The Frankfield outfit were thoroughly brilliant with the girls notching up 12 goals in three games and even more impressive was the fact that they didn’t even concede a solitary goal in the campaign: Knocknaheeny were runners up in a highly talented group of players:
The Boys “A” section for smaller schools was played out with Knockskeagh NS, Clonakilty, Bweeng NS, Mallow, Ringaskiddy NS and Scoil Naomh Seosamh Laragh, Bandon: The two teams in contention for the provincial crown were the experienced Ringaskiddy side and Laragh’s Scoil Naomh Seosamh: Their head to head encounter was to prove highly decisive with the latter taking the title on a 1/3 score line: A major scalp for the Bandon boys given the wonderful record the 2010 Champions had during this year’s competition:
The penultimate section catering for the medium Boys “B” schools saw Scoil Inse Ratha, Little Island, Scoil Iosagain, Aghada, St: Patrick’s NS, Whitechurch and Scoil na nÓg, Glanmire go for glory: Glanmire were pushed all the way by Aghada: Scoil Iosagain even managed a 1/1 draw with the Glanmire team but fell short against St: Patrick’s NS with a scoreless draw in their final game thus gifting the title to Glanmire who achieved 2 comprehensive victories and one draw to ensure their progression:
The Boys “C” Schools was the final contest of the day long events with Scoil Barra BNS, Beaumont, St: Anthony’s NS, Ballinlough, St: Joseph’s NS, Riverstown, Scoil Mhuire Fatima, North Mon all participating: Three times All Ireland stars St: Anthony’s overcame 2002 Champions Beaumont on goal difference to take the 2012 Munster title:
The People’s Capital, Cork has a marvellous record when it comes to the All Ireland series:
Scoil Barra, Beamount won an All Ireland title ten years ago in the Schools “C” section for large schools:
Ballinlough’s St: Anthony’s BNS have a phenomenal record when it comes to All Ireland titles: The school has secured three thus far, firstly in 2003, then five years later in 2008 and more recently in 2011 under the stewardship of Kevin O’Sullivan and Paddy Murphy
Ballyheale NS, Ballinhassig were runners up in 2007 in the Girls “A” section for small schools:
A fourth place finish in 2008 was recorded for Carrigaline’s St: Mary’s NS in the Girls “A” section:
The talented Ringaskiddy NS were third place contestants in the 2009 All Ireland Finals in the “A” Schools category:
While 2010 saw a bronze medal awarded to St: John’s BNS from Mayfield at the National Finals:
2012 will see the turn of Scoil Mhuire na Trocaire, Castleorchard, Buttevant, Scoil Nioclais, Frankfield, Scoil Naomh Seosamh, Laragh, Bandon, Scoil na nÓg, Glanmire and St: Anthony’s NS, Ballinlough all advance to the Munster Finals which will be held on Wednesday, May 16 in Mounthawk Park, Tralee, Co: Kerry:
The five schools will all be looking for All Ireland glory and Cork’s competition organiser Fergus McDaid bids best wishes to all the participating teams in what should prove to be a very entertaining and enjoyable encounter:
