FAI Schools 5-a-side Munster Finals

Munster Mayhem in the making on Wednesday

09 May 2011

The Provincial Finals are the culmination of three months of competition held at County level which sees schools progress to the respective Provincial Finals:

The event saw over 16,400 children participate last year: The competition has been running since the mid 1990’s, the event is more popular than ever with 1,005 schools involved in 2010

The Munster Provincial Finals will be hosted in the impressive Corinthian Park, Castletreaure, Douglas on Wednesday, 11 May: 30 Schools from Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford will showcase their talent with a total of 240 participants involved in the day/long event:

The FAI Schools 5-a-side is the biggest and best competition in the 2011 Primary Schools Soccer Calendar: There are 5 divisions to suit all school sizes: While FAI Schools encourage boys and girls to play on the same team, there is also a separate competition for girls’ schools: A number of teams can represent one school depending on the size of their student body, giving more children the chance to develop their skills in a safe, child centered and exciting environment:

It promises to be a fantastic fun filled day with winners and runners up receiving a commemorative medal: The lucky winners will also receive a free Umbro Jersey and the prestigious Munster trophy for their School:

Once the Provincial Finalists have been identified they won’t have long to wait for the All Ireland series: The National Finals will be held in Leah Victoria Park, Tullamore on Wednesday, 1 June:

Last year the Munster Schools participating in the competition did extremely well picking up two third place and three fourth place finishes: Limerick’s Scoil Mhuire of Broadford were third in the “A” Schools section along with St: John’s Boys NS, Mayfield in the “B” Schools: CBS Tralee were fourth in the “C” Section: Returning from their All Ireland appearance Scoil na Maighdine, Newmarket on Fergus will be hoping for a slight improvement in form this time around as they snatched fourth place in the “A” Girls section while Scoil Dean Cussen, Bruff in Limerick had the same success in the “B” Girls category:

The Kingdom will see Derryquay NS, Presentation Monastery School, Killarney, Fossa NS, St: Oliver’s all make the journey to Douglas for a fun filled day of soccer having tasted County success last month: The teams will be itching for another outing come Wednesday evening:

Scoil na Maighdine in Clare will be hoping to continue their fine form which saw them capture the Munster title last season: The school had a fantastic run of form at the National Finals with the girls snatching an All Ireland bronze medal that year:

Host County Cork have Bweeng NS, St: Patrick’s NS, Whitechurch, St: Anthony’s and St: Mary’s of Carrigaline making the short trip to Douglas to represent the Rebel County in what should prove to be an enjoyable day for all involved:

St: Declan’s NS in Waterford will make a welcome return to the Provincial Final: The School captured Provincial glory in 2009 in the “C” Section and captured third place in the All Ireland series that same year while tasting All Ireland glory in 2005 in the Nationals and will be hoping their experience in this competition can bring them success in Munster yet again:

Holy Family NS in Ennis make a welcome return to the Provincial Finals and will be hoping to capture honours this year as the Girls team competes in Girls “B” category: Doors NS, Knockanean NS, St: Conaire’s NS, Shannon, and Scoil na Maighdine should also be in the running for silverware for the banner County on Wednesday:

St: Ursula’s of Ballytruckle are no strangers to the 5-a-side competition having last tasted All Ireland success in 2007 in the Girls “B” Section: The school makes a welcome return in the same section four years later:

Tipperary’s duo of Scoil Eoin Noafa and Monastery CBS will represent the county with pride having reached the same stage last season: Also representing the Tipp contingency are Cloughjordan NS, Newport NS and Sisters of Charity:

St: Anthony’s BNS are back again to compete in another Provincial Final and will be hoping home advantage will see them progress to the Nationals: This school has a phenomenal record in this competition with various teams through the years winning the prestigious All Ireland title in the “C” section for large schools: The school last captured the titles in 2003 and 2008 and the people of Ballinlough will be urging the players on for a repeat performance in 2011:

Corkian’s St: Mary’s NS, Carrigaline have two teams competing for a title with the Boys competing in the “B” Section and the Girls in the Girls “A” Section:

The “C” Section will be hotly contested with St: Conaire’s NS, Clare reunited with old rivals Monastery CBS NS, Tipperary Town: Both schools were in different groups last time around but it will be interesting to see who qualifies for this section with some new schools such as St: Oliver’s NS, Kerry and Caherdavin, Limerick joining the fold:

Roxborough NS, Limerick will take part in the “B” Section which saw them qualify for this stage last season and the school was unfortunate to lose out to eventual winners St: John’s NS, Mayfield, Cork last year: Another school making a return is Piltown NS who drew against Roxborough last season: Their experience will ensure an interesting and exciting conclusion to the Munster Finals with the impressive St: Anthony’s of Cork also in the running in the same category:
