Moville out manoeuvre Ursuline College
Bank of Ireland FAI Schools Minor Girls National Cup Semi Final
Wednesday, March 29, 2017
Moville Community College 2-1 Ursuline College, Sligo
Sligo OG (46), Megan Havlin (52) Helen Monaghan (44)
INISHOWEN’s Moville Community College came from behind to cause a slight upset in the Peace Link Sports Centre in Clones yesterday afternoon (March 28) when they defeated last season’s First Year Champions Ursuline College, Sligo with Megan Havlin grabbing the match winner eight minutes from time.
Moville were beaten finalists in this Cup category last season but many of their players had moved on a grade. The inform Ursuline College were carrying good form coming into this Cup decider. They had defeated newcomers Ballinrobe CS 5-0 in their Connacht Cup Final and were looking to replicate this recent good luck in the next stage of competition.
The Sligo outfit had come runners up in the Home Nations Rod Houston Cup last October and were well set up for this crunch encounter with Helen Monaghan notching up the goals for her side.
It was Monaghan that opened the scoring for the Sligo girls midway through the second half when she poked the ball past McLaughlin in the Moville goal on 44 minutes.
Their lead was short lived as Kerry Ann Brown’s set piece two minutes later was delivered dangerous into the box for a Sligo defender to guide into the back of her own net, 1-1.
Havlin and Brown had been combining well all afternoon and it was the tall striker that used her physical prowess to slot past Byrne with ease for the match winner eight minutes from time.
Sligo threw everything at the Ulster side in the latter stages but Kim Mullan’s charges held strong and booked their place in yet another National Cup Final.
Moville will await the winners of the other semi-final pairing which sees Presentation Secondary School, Thurles face Presentation Secondary School, Kilkenny in the RSC, Waterford tomorrow (Thursday, March 31) with a 1.30pm kick off scheduled.
The Bank of Ireland FAI Schools Minor Girls National Cup Final will be a double header with the Minor ‘B’ Girls on Wednesday, April 26. Venue to be confirmed.
