A solitary goal courtesy of Aoibhin Ní Chasaide from Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair was enough to see them overcome Leinster Champions Gaelcholáiste Reachrann, Domhnach Míde in Monaghan United FC last Thursday, (January 16)
The Ulster starlets made the brighter start to the game as Áine Ní Fhearraigh hit the crossbar in dramatic fashion with three minutes played.
Maria Ní Ghallchoir had a gilt edged chance to give her team a firm advantage five minutes later but her effort went wide of the far post when she was one on one with the Dublin netminder.
Aoibhin Ní Chasaide had another great opportunity to score ten minutes from the break but she just couldn’t get her strike on target. A few moments later, the Donegal student forced an excellent save from Ni Laochdha to keep them in the game.
Sam Verdon’s side had a few nice set piece opportunities midway through the half but Roisin Ní Chasaide was in fine form to deny the Gaelcholáiste attack as the sides went into the break scoreless.
The decisive moment of the game came seven minutes into the second half as Ni Chasaide pounced on the ball following a brilliantly flighted delivery from Brianna Ni Fhearraigh inside the box. It forced a good save from the Gaelcholáiste keeper Aibhilín Ní Laochdha but unfortunately, she couldn’t contain it and the ball feel to the feet of the Donegal youngster to tap in from close range.
Áine Ní Fhearraigh had a snapshot just on the hour mark but couldn’t penetrate the goal.
Gaelcholáiste Reachrann had a super chance to equalise four minutes from time as the hard working Anna Nic Thadhg made a pacy attack forward but again Roisin Ni Chasaide read the situation perfectly and came out of her goal early to smother the ball as her side held out to win the contest.
Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair will now play Coola Post Primary School of Sligo in this year’s Cup decider. The Connacht crew enjoyed a 3-0 victory over Munster stars Midleton College in Maree Oranmore earlier this evening.
