The stage is set for the Connacht Post Primary Schools Futsal Finals on Thursday, 18 November in the NUIG Sports Centre. A total of 120 students from Galway, Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo and Roscommon will participate in this action packed event to claim the coveted title of Connacht Futsal Champions.
The competition caters for boys and girls in first year only which delivers a quality fast paced action packed game focusing on skill, speed and technique.
Futsal is an indoor version of association football. It is played between two teams of five players, one of whom is the goalkeeper, and up to seven substitutes per team. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used.
Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regulation football. The rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.
The boy’s competition will see “the bish” up against Grange Vocational School, Sligo, St. Mureduch’s College, Ballina, Carrigallen Vocational School and Strokestown’s Scoil Mhuire.
The girl’s competition will cater for Colaiste Mhuire, Ballygar, Ursuline College, Finisklin, Davitt College, Castlebar, Lough Allen College and Elphin Community School.
Defending champions St. Joseph’s College will be hoping to defend their Provincial crown as well as girls champions Davitt College, Castlebar.
The event which is part of the FAI’s football in schools programme will be co-ordinated by Galway City Community Development Officer, Mr. Nigel Keady. For further information please contact Nigel on 086 0418648
