Leitrim FAI Primary Schools Futsal Blitz

Report courtesy of Damon Kearney

The Leitrim FAI Primary Schools Futsal blitz aimed at third and fourth class pupils demonstrated some great matches and some cracking goals with the Southern Section of the event taking place at the impressive Aura Leisure Centre, Carrick/on/Shannon on Monday, November 28

The Northern Section was held in Diffreen National School’s Astroturf, with the event taking place on Monday last, December 12: The event was organised and run by FAI/Leitrim County Council Development Officer Mr: Damon Kearney:

The competition caters for boys and girls with the emphasis on small sided games played on reduced sized pitches: It was a day to remember as all the eight schools and players served up a feast of football with goals, upsets and surprises along the way as a total of 8 teams took part in this year’s event:

The Southern Section was played out were 5 teams came together to test their abilities against other schools from the South of the County: Each of the talented teams provided great entertainment to the watching crowd as they played some fantastic football:

On what turned out to be a fantastic day, the football side of things more than matched the occasion with all teams matching their skill with great spirits:

Gaelscoile Liatroma proved difficult to beat in the proceedings playing good football as they remained undefeated scoring plenty of goals along the way: Fenagh NS “A” were the only side to hold the their own against the Gaelscoile from Carrick as they too remained undefeated after 1/1 draw in their final game:

Fenagh “B”, St Mary’s Boy’s NS and Leitrim Village NS found it tough against the fore mentioned schools but each managed to get a win each in some memorable games between the three sides:

The girl’s competition showcased some great games and some very talented teams and footballers:

With a group of 3, it was with each team playing each other twice: All three teams seemed capable of taking the win off each other in some thrilling matches

It was Gaelscoile Liatroma girls who were in great form as they ended the day undefeated despite the great efforts of Leitrim Village NS in the last game of the day; they were unlucky to finish on the wrong side of an end to end game, resulting in a 3/2 finish:

Marist Girls NS played nice football throughout picking up two wins as they overcame Leitrim Village NS in two close games:

The Northern Section was played in Diffreen astroturf pitch with 5 teams all playing off against each other: The blitz showcased some great games and some very talented teams and footballers: It proved to have close games, with the play going from one end to the other as each team tried to gain the upper hand: The woodwork, close misses, brave defending and some fantastic goalkeeping meant each side cancelled each other out

Leckaun NS proved to be a tough match by ending the day as the only undefeated team: An outstanding team effort along with outstanding individual skill from Kevin McDermott and Teresa Rooney who were on top form as she grabbed some vital goals for her side:

The host’s Diffreen NS picked up a couple of wins as they played some nice football in a few entertaining games: St: Clare’s had an “A” and “B” side competing in the blitz with both sides doing well as Shay Gurn and Racheal Conlon proved to be good outlets for their sides:

Killenummery NS also found things tough at times as results went against them but to their credit they never let their heads drop as they proved to be tough opposition for any side:

The girl’s blitz saw St: Clare’s enter a couple of teams to playoff against each other as most of the girls got their first taste of organised futsal: Plenty of the girls were also involved in the Soccer Sister’s Programme in Manorhamilton and displayed lots of skills as the goals kept coming from both sides:

FAI/Leitrim County Council Community Development Officer, Mr: Damon Kearney would like to thank all the schools who took part and compliment all the teachers and mentors for the great sporting behaviour displayed by all the players on and off the field:  A big thank you to all the referees who did a fantastic job throughout
