The boys from Summerhill College, Sligo and the girls from Sacred Heart School in Mayo were crowned FAI Schools First Year Futsal Connacht Champions last week in the wonderful surrounds of IT Sligo:
The Post Primary Schools futsal competition is in its fifth year nationally caters for first year students with both boys and girls categories included:
The competition comprised of five rounds with the top two teams going straight through to the final:
BOYS SECTION
SLIGO’s Summerhill College under the leadership of Pat Tuohy were level on points with Coley Kelly’s St: Joseph’s College following four competitive fixtures in the group stages:
Summerhill got off to winning ways with a 5/0 win against St: Clare’s Comprehensive, Leitrim: The Bish did one better as they slotted six past Abbey CC in their opening game:
Summerhill lost their second fixture of the day to an inform Sancta Maria of Louisburgh with a 3/5 scoreline: The Bish took the advantage here with a 3/0 win against the Leitrim qualifiers St: Clare’s
The penultimate round saw The Bish win 4/2 over Louisburgh while Summerhill defeated Abbey 4/2:
The final rounds saw Summerhill comfortable winners over rivals the Bish winning 7/2 while Sancta Maria drew 2/2 with Abbey CC:
The final was nothing like the earlier group stage game as it ended 3/2 to Summerhill College in an epic game: The Bish were impressive throughout but some sharp shooting from the Sligo team ensured the silverware remained in the host County:
GIRLS SECTION
Seamas McCafferky’s Sacred Heart School were in stunning form at this competition with 17 goals scored throughout the group stages, more impressively was that the team only conceded once: Not surprisingly the Mayo girls topped the group on eight points, closely followed by Seán Boland’s Mercy Convent of Roscommon:
The remaining teams namely Mercy College, Sligo, St: Clare’s Comprehensive, Manorhamilton and Colaiste Bhaile Chlair of Galway were evenly matched throughout the day with only a point of two separating the sides:
Mercy Convent were underdogs going in to the final as they had previously lost 3/1 to McCafferky’s side earlier in the day:
The final was a very tense affair and much closer than anticipated: It was the Westport team that held their nerve, narrowly defeating their counterparts 2/1 in a showcase finale:
Summerhill College & Sacred Heart School, Westport will now progress to the All Ireland Finals which will be held on Wednesday, December 4 at Franciscan College, Gormanston: We wish the schools the very best of luck in their endeavours to be crowned All Ireland Champions:
