All roads lead to the Showgrounds, Sligo Rovers FC tomorrow, Wednesday, March 2 for the finale of the SPAR FAI Primary School 5s County qualifiers.
John Russell (FAI Development Officer) had 34 schools participating in this prestigious competition this season which has been a fantastic increase on 2015.
The fun five-a-side schools competition, which is open to boys and girls from 4th, 5th and 6th class, begun with a county-wide blitz in the same venue on February 24 with the 16 winners progressing to this stage. All participating schools will be guaranteed an action packed day of activity with games kicking off at 10.30am
The ‘A’ Cup caters for boys and/or mixed teams for small schools which sees Carn NS, Gurteen, St. Brendan’s NS, Scoil Chríost Rí, Enniscrone and Bunninadden NS all competing in this talented category.
The Girls ‘A’ Cup which only caters for the female participants in the small schools section will also feature the ladies from Carn NS, Gurteen as well as Mullaghroe NS, Maugherow NS and SN Réalt na Mara NS, Rosses Point all competing.
The medium schools in the ‘B’ Cup feature an impressive outfit as St. John’s NS, Temple Street, Scoil Mhuire gan Smál NS, Ballymote, St. Edward’s NS, Sligo Town and Ursula NS all doing battle in this highly contested grouping.
The Girls ‘B’ Cup will see a glamourous array of schools in action as Holy Family NS, Tubbercurry, St. Patrick’s NS, Calry, Strandhill NS and St. John’s NS of Ballisodare all involved.
Some of these schools will be in very familiar territory with Strandhill NS defeating Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré in the Girls ‘A’ Cup last season while St. John’s NS, Ballisodare were victorious over Ursula NS in the Girls ‘B’ Cup 12 months previous. Calry NS proved too strong for a talented Carraroe NS in the ‘B’ Cup as well as Enniscrone over St. Aidan’s NS in the ‘A’ Cup but what will be their faith this time around?
The SPAR Primary School 5s Programme is a schools initiative organised by the Football Association of Ireland Schools (FAI Schools) and supported by SPAR. The competition attracts entries from nearly 20,000 students and more than 1,000 schools nationwide. With participation levels increasing year on year the grassroots programme is now the largest primary schools competition in the country
We wish all participating schools the very best of luck in the Sligo Finals Day. Go out and enjoy the occasion.
