Ireland lose out in Bob Docherty Cup to their Northern counterparts

BOB DOCHERTY CUP 2011

Republic of Ireland 1-3 Northern Ireland

THE REPUBLIC of Ireland's Under 15 Girls Schools side had a disappointing result to their border rivals in the final game of the Bob Docherty Cup after they were beaten 1-3 by Northern Ireland on day three in Cardiff this morning:

The Republic suffered their first defeat yesterday at the hands of Scotland in a closely fought encounter (2-3) while enjoying the perfect start a day earlier with a 3-1 against host nation Wales:

The Republic of Ireland required a 2-0 win against the North to snatch a final day victory from the league leaders which would be down to goal difference if they could pull off a surprise victory on their rivals:

The North were in flying form and high on the success experienced from notable 2-0 wins against Scotland and Wales prior to their final day appearance against the Republic of Ireland:

Captain Amy O’Connor an experienced player who featured last season was called upon to rally her troops for the big finale:

The Northerners put the Republic under sustained pressure in the first period: Their flowing football was no match for Carey’s side as Chloe MGlade and Katelyn McKane put two past the Republic before the interval:

An uphill battle for Carey’s selection but the super Amber Barrett was on song yet again in the campaign to claim one back midway through the second period to take the game to the opposition:

Unfortunately the Northern Ireland side were too strong and a splendid goal courtesy of Amy Macken sealed an impressive victory in the Cup campaign for the Northerners:

The North were well deserved winners having secured three straight wins in the competition only conceding once to the Irish on the final day: The winners managed to score a remarkable seven goals in the three day event to claim the coveted title, a first for the country at this age level:

Disappointment for the Republic of Ireland but they can take great encouragement from their performances throughout the week with a number of key players making an impression on the management team: Definitely some future stars in the making and something to work on for next season
