Centenary Shield

Press Release: Saturday, April 23, 2016

Republic of Ireland finish their campaign in Wales

The tenth and final Inspiresport Centenary Shield fixture of the season will take place on Thursday next, April 28 as the Republic of Ireland travel to Llandundno to take on the Welsh.

Paddy O’Reilly will make two changes to the side that defeated Scotland last week in Killarney.

Clonkeen College netminder Eric Donnelly will make way for Corey Chambers (Gorey CS) who returns to the squad following his heroics against Northern Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day.

Another scholar making a welcome return is Fintan Borotto who was a late call up for the Northern encounter in Arklow when Conor Kane was ruled out due to concussion. Borotto is a student in Davitt College, Castlebar and he will be hoping O’Reilly looks favourably on him for some game time.

Unfortunately Jesse Stafford Lacey (Mercy SS Mounthawk) picked up a knock in the Scotland game and misses out on the final game of the series.

The Irish have already seen England pick up the Centenary Shield for this season following their 2-2 draw in The New Saints stadium earlier this month so it’s pride the lads will be playing for as the Welsh hope to end their season with a win on home soil.

Wales have picked up three points to date following their 1-0 win away to Scotland. Ifan Jones scored a vital goal on the hour mark to get the Dragons off the mark following their earlier 1-2 defeat to England in their opening game in Bangor City FC in mid-March. The hosts will be hoping to bounce back after a 2-0 defeat away to Northern Ireland last week in Comber FC.

The Republic of Ireland have two draws and one win under their belt which sees them currently sitting on second spot in the League Table. Another three points away from home would be a nice way to finish a competitive outing for the lads. They will be disappointed not to have retained their Centenary Shield title but England were worthy winners following a comprehensive season which saw them net eight goals in four games. The late winner proved vital in their success story for 2016.
