Irish enjoy opening day win against Scots

Monday, April 22, 2019

Scotland 0-2 Republic of Ireland

Emma Doherty (30), Orlagh Fitzpatrick (60)

THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND scholars have made a wonderful start to their Bob Docherty Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over a lively Scottish outfit in Salou this morning.

David Thompson had the Scotland side extremely well prepared for this clash and they were easily the better side in the first half with MacLean, Handley and Robinson causing all sorts of problems for the Irish defense.

Amy Mahon had to thwart the tartan army’s attacking prowess in the twelfth minute as Browning chased down a loose ball.

There was a severe onslaught of corner kicks for the Scotland team as they pressed forward at every opportunity and looked dangerous from set pieces but St. Joseph’s SS, Charlestown star Mahon was equal to the challenge.

Aoibheann Costello (Mercy SS, Tuam) and Jess Stapleton (Palmerstown CS) were superb in the opening half hour with the duo clearing up in defense for Berkeley’s outfit.

The Irish then took the lead on the stroke of half time following a Scotland corner which was whipped out by Stapleton to feed Scoil Mhuire grad Emma Doherty. The Donegal youngster made a pacy run down the right wing and a great one two with Áine Walsh (Salesian Secondary College, Pallaskenry), saw her get the ball back at the edge of the box and she rolled the ball under the onrushing Scottish goalkeeper.

Berkeley had a number of changes at the break which saw Aoife Cronin, Jenna Slattery and Alison Long all introduced.

The momentum was with the Republic of Ireland in the second half as the team managed to create a little more up front through Cronin and Slattery and Stapleton’s set-pieces.

Eva Mangan was exceptional for the Irish when introduced alongside Liadan Clynch with ten minutes remaining.

Ireland’s second goal came just on the hour mark as Scoil Pól, Kilfinane scholar Aoife Cronin headed the ball goal-ward from a Jess Stapleton free-kick which fell to St. Mary’s College pupil Orlagh Fitzpatrick who headed home for the insurance goal.

The score line may not have done justice to Scotland as they now go in search of a win tomorrow when they take on Northern Ireland while the Republic of Ireland entertain England. The other fixture down for contention is Wales against newcomers Gibraltar.

The Welsh enjoyed a narrow 2-1 victory over England this morning while Northern Ireland overcame Gilbraltar 3-0 as match day one drew to a conclusion.

John Read Trophy

Tomorrow’s outing with the Republic of Ireland and England will have an added dimension as they compete for the John Read Trophy which is usually held in March as prep for this tournament.

Both sides will be looking for some valuable points in the competition but will also have an eye on some silverware which has seen the Irish win 2 of the previous 5 encounters.
