Welsh descend on Dublin for Centenary Shield showdown
THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND will end their 2019 Centenary Shield series in Home Farm FC tomorrow evening (Thursday, April 25) when the Welsh come to town.
The two sides will be playing for pride as Northern Ireland collected the silverware last week in Belfast with a comprehensive 3-1 win over William O’Connor’s youngsters.
It has been a disappointing campaign for both sides with the Republic of Ireland mustering only a point from the last three games. The Irish drew to Scotland on their opening clash away from home but suffered two defeats, going down 2-0 to England in Dalymount and 3-1 away to Northern Ireland last week.
Similarly Wales will be looking for a marked improvement in form. They had a sensational 1-0 win away to England in their first outing but bitter disappointment not to add to this with slender losses to Scotland and Northern Ireland which see they just above the Republic on the league table.
The Republic of Ireland Head Coach will have Jack O’Connor in as a late replacement for Oatland’s College student Jake Ellis. Jack who studies in St. Louis CS, Kiltimagh has experience at this level coming on a substitute against Scotland and also featuring last week against the North.
Last season, the Republic of Ireland enjoyed a 2-1 victory over the Welsh in Cefn Druids AFC.
Captain Cian Murphy made the perfect start to proceedings as he opened his account with a goal after just eight minutes of play which set up the visitors perfectly.
This was later cancelled out by Alaric Jones with a quarter of an hour played for the hosts but three minutes later Waterford’s Darryl Walsh extended the Irish lead from a wonderfully placed set piece.
This fixture is always an intense battle despite having nothing to play for. Tomorrow night will be no different as each Nation will want to finish with a flourish.
