Irish secure a share of the spoils with Scots

Scotland 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Josh Mulligan (44)                              Brandon Bermingham (47)

A goal either side of the half time interval ensured a stalemate for the Scottish outfit over new recruits, the Republic of Ireland in the visitors first run out of the season tonight in Ayr United FC.

Scotland on the other hand secured their first point out of a possible nine which will now see them heading into their final game of the Shield campaign in a fortnight’s time away to Wales.

William O’Connor’s side will regroup now following the one point gained as England come to town on April 12 for the second fixture of their 2019 schedule.

Neither side really created any clear cut chances on the half hour mark but within seconds of each other both Scotland and the Republic had hit the woodwork, the Irish opportunity falling to St. Joseph’s College scholar Colin Kelly.

Scottish maestro Josh MULLIGAN popped up just before the break to slot past the industrious David Odumosu to take a slight advantage into the second period.

However we didn’t have to wait long for the equalizer as St. Mary’s grad Brandon BERMINGHAM netted for the Republic with just two minutes on the clock.

Irish Captain Niall O’Keeffe (De La Salle College, Waterford) put in a sterling performance for his side throughout the 90 minutes as well as some exceptional saves from O’Fiaich College student David Odumosu to keep the Irish in contention.

Oatland’s College youngster Jake Ellis missed a gilt edged chance to take the lead for O’Connor’s crew as he was one on one with Scotland’s goalkeeper Heraghty but couldn’t avail of the opportunity afforded to him as the sides played out an entertaining draw.

Next week will see top of the table contenders, Northern Ireland away to England on Friday night. Frank Wilson’s charges have snatched two valuable wins in their opening exchanges, firstly at home to Scotland and more importantly away to Wales last week. Momentum will be high in the camp heading into this crunch decider.

William O’Connor will no doubt look on with interest as he has both sides to entertain next month in quick succession. England are next up on April 12 in Dalymount while the students make the short trip to Belfast on April 18 to take on Northern Ireland while they finish their campaign in Home Farm FC on April 25 against Wales.
