Dundalk overcome Waterford

UMBRO FAI Schools First Year Boys All Ireland Semi Final

De La Salle, Waterford 0/2 De La Salle, Dundalk

James Renaghan (55), Adam O’Connor (57)

De La Salle, Dundalk overcame Munster side De La Salle Waterford in an entertaining encounter in Newbridge Town yesterday afternoon (May 12)

The Leinster lads were under the cosh for much of the first half with the Waterford school enjoying much of the possession: The wind was definitely a factor in the style of play imposed by both teams:

Waterford’s Callum O’Neill had the first real opportunity of the afternoon within seconds of the kick off: His wonder strike from the left wing went agonising close, hitting the side netting much to the relief of Daniel Mulligan in the Dundalk goal

Waterford’s earlier effort was cancelled out ten minutes later as Dundalk’s Sean Murray glanced his head onto a powerful ball into the box from Adam O’Connor for the youngster Murray to just nod the ball over the bar:

Eoin Daly had possession in the Dundalk half on 13 minutes as he held the ball down the left wing before cutting into the centre with a darting run past defenders Bailey and Morgan: His excellent execution on goal was nearly rattling the net only for the versatile Daniel Mulligan to make an excellent sweeping save:

It was deep into the second period before the game came to life: James Renaghan ran onto a well measured pass from Adam O’Connor on the right wing: Renaghan sent a high ball into the goal area for Mulligan to misjudge the ball and the Dundalk lad ended up lobbing the keeper for the first of the afternoon for Brian Halpin’s side:

Dundalk’s second came two minutes later as the impressive Adam O’Connor who was instrumental in the De La Salle success got his name on the score sheet with a brilliant shot on target from 20 yards out:

De La Salle Dundalk can now look forward to an appearance in the All Ireland Final as they now prepare for a meeting with Connacht stars, St: Joseph’s College, Galway in a mouth watering final in two weeks time:
