The Roscommon Post Primary Schools First Year Futsal Finals were held last Tuesday (November 15) with competitions taking place in two wonderful venues: The boys section was hosted in Fourmilehouse while Scoil Muire gan Smal, Convent of Mercy’s sports hall played host to the girls section:
Futsal is the UEFA version of indoor 5-a-side football:
The boy’s competition saw ten teams battle it out to become Roscommon Champions but it was down to two teams in the end as Scoil Mhuire, Strokestown and Elphin Community College who all starred:
The Strokestown team were probably favourites to win but Elphin took a surprise early lead and held Strokestown at bay for long periods of the game: Strokestown finally equalized halfway through the second half but were undone in injury time when a corner for Elphin was deflected into the Strokestown net by their goalkeeper: There was barely time for play to resume before the final whistle came: Elphin winning in dramatic fashion on a 2/1 score line to progress
The girl’s competition saw eight teams take part but was quickly narrowed down to the two best teams: Again, Scoil Mhuire of Strokestown and the hosts Convent of Mercy, Roscommon Town were totally impressive:
Scoil Mhuire took the lead but the Convent were not to be out done on this occasion especially on home soil and fought back to win 4/1 in the finish:
Both Scoil Muire gan Smal, Convent of Mercy and Elphin Community College now go on to represent Roscommon in the Connacht Finals which will be hosted by NUIG tomorrow, Tuesday, November 22: Good luck to the County Champions:
