Hat-trick hero Fahey ensures the points for Berkeley

THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND provided a polished display against a very strong Scottish side in Jordanstown this afternoon (March 24) to open their Bob Docherty Cup account in fine style.

The win is a positive start to this weekend’s proceedings as the Schools select go in search of the elusive Bob Docherty Cup crown following an eight year hiatus.

The score-line may not reflect the efforts of the Scots who hit the crossbar midway through the first half and were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty in the second period.

St. Mary’s Glasnevin starlet Rugile AskaInte had an outstanding game for the Irish as she kept an impressive clean sheet with some audacious saves. 

Captain Della Doherty, Manorhamilton’s Muireann Devaney and Thurles youngster Aoibheann Clancy were superb for the Irish.

The Republic of Ireland were confident and composed on the ball and provided a stunning performance from the class of 2018 with St. Paul’s SS, Oughterard pupil Anna FAHEY demanding the spotlight with a magnificent hat-trick in the first half. A fourth came courtesy of the penalty spot as Palmerstown’s student Jessie STAPLETON slotted home with ease. 

The Republic of Ireland will now focus their attentions on Stephen Graham’s Northern Ireland ‘B’ select as games kick off at 2pm tomorrow.

The Republic of Ireland will be hoping for more of the same as Berkeley considers his selection options for Match Day 2. The substitutions that was introduced at half time and midway through the second half impressed so it gives him some additional options if he does decide to change things up against one of the host teams. 

Wales and England both managed to secure victories in their opening meetings but it was by the slenderest of margins.

Northern Ireland ‘A’ opened the scoring through a text book set-piece which was headed home to give Ryan Mullen the perfect start to his campaign against the English.

Claire Robinson’s side had a chance to square things up but Bebe Smith missed from the penalty spot. However, the youngster made amends moments later as she slotted home the equaliser.

England’s Ruby Hughes provided an amazing conclusion to their encounter with an incredible shot from distance that curled into the top corner to give them a surprising 2-1 win.

Northern Ireland ‘A’ will rue some missed opportunities in that game as they had several one and one’s with the opposition’s keeper which went astray of the target. Mullen’s squad will now face David Thomson’s Scottish outfit who are desperate to keep their title dreams alive.

Defending Champions Wales made hard work of their opening game when Northern Ireland ‘B’ provided the entertainment. Welsh Captain Carrie Jones with the only goal of the game coming five minutes from time. Graham’s side should have equalised in injury time but their effort hit the woodwork to give Matthew Clement’s crew full points.

Wales will feature against England tomorrow so this game will prove crucial to their play-off places on Monday morning with a win sure to secure a top spot finish in day three of the competition for the victors.
