The Bish, Galway & St. Columb’s Derry in the driving seat
The SAFIB Allen McKinstry Cup kicked off in Athlone this afternoon with a blistering pace as three competitive games were witnessed.
In the driving seat after the first day of action is St. Joseph’s Patrician College, Galway (the Bish) and St. Columb’s College, Derry with two narrow victories under their belts.
The other outing saw local outfit Marist College draw one apiece with Scottish heavyweights St. Ninian’s. The Athlone crew managed a bonus point when they won the penalty shoot-out 5-3.
GAME ONE
St. Joseph’s Patrician College, Galway 2-1 Ysgol Greenhill Tenby

A really enthralling game between the Irish Champions ‘the Bish’ and Welsh titans Ysgol Greenhill School, Tenby in TUS, Athlone opened the proceedings on Match Day One.
It had all the markings of a draw in the latter stages of the game but a moment of brilliance saw the Irish lads win out.
It was all Galway in the opening quarter as Aaron Hayat and Dara McGauran tested the Welsh keeper Jesse Craig.
McGauren even had the ball in the back of the net but it was chalked off for an off-side.
The game sprung to life four minutes from the break when Ethan LEWIS smashed in a worldie from 25 yards out to give the Welsh side a slender lead at the interval.
It took St. Joseph’s the latter stages to mount a response when Ishan JHURRY netted a blinder from inside the box to level proceedings with three minutes of normal time remaining.
Rob Grealish thought the game was destined for penalties so he brought on sub keeper Patrick O’Connell for the impressive Aaron Hestor in the dying minutes of the game. The change wasn’t required as moments later, the winner was scored.
Daniel SANGONDELE burst through the Welsh defence to finish neatly past the Welsh netminder on his second time of asking with three minutes of added time played.
Unfortunately for the Welsh they couldn’t mount a comeback despite their best efforts in the intervening period of injury time.
Rob Grealish’s squad net the full three points on offer in a high tempo performance.

The other fixture of the afternoon saw local side Marist College, Athlone face off against an impressive St. Ninian’s in Athlone Town AFC.
It turned out to be a ferocious affair with seven yellow cards brandished in all as well as a red for the Scottish scholars.
Martin Grogan’s lads came from behind to level proceedings with five minutes remaining as Dylan DENNEHY cancelled out Rory KELLY’S first half effort to bring the game to penalties.
Again it was the Irish that kept their heads to see out a bonus point allocation as they won the shoot-out 5-3 in the end. The leave with two points out of a possible three on offer. St. Ninian’s get off the mark with their one point allocated for a draw.

The later kick-off time saw Derry Champions St. Columb’s College net a brace to see off their English counterparts South Hunsley School in Athlone Town AFC.
Another hotly contested fixture which saw a number of yellow cards awarded as well as a red late on for South Hunsley, which saw them down to ten men for the latter stages of the contest.
The Northern Ireland institute got on the scoresheet midway through the first half when Zhai GLACKIN snuck in his effort at the left post in a congested penalty area to give the Saints the early advantage.
With a minute remaining in the first half, Derry’s Yoann Prigent latched off a blistering strike that was just wide of the mark while down the other end of the pitch, England’s Nathan Cunningham had a fabulous shot sail just over the upright.
The Derry tally was doubled eight minutes from time when the talented Shane GILLESPIE popped up to strike a wonderful goal with an excellent through ball from the industrious Yoann Prigent.
South Hunsley were unlucky not to convert some of the chances created late on but the Derry defence was well marshalled to see them keep a clean sheet.
The Saints with three points in the bag following the opening encounter.

NEXT UP
Match Day Two on Monday morning will see the table toppers meet as St. Joseph’s Patrician College, Galway take on St. Columb’s College, Derry in Athlone Town AFC at 10.30am. Surely the winners of that outing will be in prime position going into the final round of fixtures on Tuesday morning.
Kicking off simultaneously to that game will be Marist College, Athlone against South Hunsley School in TUS, Athlone. Marist will be looking to add to their points tally while the English students will be hoping to bounce back from their earlier defeat.
And then at 12.30pm in Athlone Town AFC we will see Ysgol Greenhill School, Tenby face off against St. Ninian’s High School. The Welsh were in fine form earlier today and will hope to bring the same tempo to their next test while Scotland’s St. Ninian’s will look to expand on their one point from today’s fixture.
It leaves for some tasty ties as the six teams do battle in their penultimate fixture.
