Under 18 Boys’ International | SAFIB Centenary Shield
O’Brien names squad for Scottish opener
Sunday, February 25, 2024
THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND SCHOOLS will open their SAFIB Centenary Shield account this Thursday evening, February 29 when they take on Scotland in Athlone Town AFC at 7pm
Derek O’Brien will make one change to the side that suffered a 2-1 defeat to Australia five weeks ago.
Tom McLOUGHLIN (Malahide Community School) who started against Australia misses out as Brian CUNNINGHAM (Presentation College, Athenry) returns from injury to rejoin the 18-player squad.
The Galway scholar was capped last season alongside trio Adam O’HALLORAN (Clarin College, Athenry), Rhys KELLY NOONAN (Coláiste Mhuire, Crosshaven) and Aidan RUSSELL VARGAS (Lusk Community College) who also make the cut again this season.
The two goalkeepers at O’Brien’s disposal are Edvinas JAKAS (Lucan Community College) and Under 17 Republic of Ireland International Óisín COONEY (Carndonagh Community School).
Forward Calum COSTELLOE (Comeragh College, Carrick on Suir) got on the score sheet against the Socceroo’s, will be joined next week by Hugh PARKER (Temple Carrig School, Greystones), and the forementioned Cunningham and Kelly-Noonan.
Vying for the midfield spots will be Daire PATTON (Summerhill College, Sligo) who has already Captained the Schools select this season with Evan LYNCH (Christian Brothers College, Cork) and James McATEER (Loreto Community School, Milford) as well as the experienced duo of Russell Vargas and O’Halloran.
There is an abundance of defenders with a high level of expertise in Seán MACKEY (Coláiste Chiarain, Leixlip), Kyle DONOGHUE (Kildare Town Community School), Callum HONOHAN (Edmund Rice College, Carrigaline), Callum DOYLE TRAVERS (St. Fintan’s High School, Sutton), Darragh COYLE (Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana), Kyle McDONAGH (St. Attracta’s Community School, Tubbercurry) and Robbie LYNCH (Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher) all in contention.
This encounter will be the second of ten in the Shield series. Last Friday (February 23) saw joint holders England travel to Belfast to take on Northern Ireland with the hosts scoring a hat-trick of goals in the second half to take the points.
Following the Republic’s opening game on Thursday night, they will follow this up with another home game against table toppers Northern Ireland the following Thursday, March 7 in Athlone. The penultimate game for O’Brien’s side will be away to joint holders England and they conclude away to Wales. The English host the Republic on Friday, April 5 while the series will finish up on Thursday, April 18 in Briton Ferry Llansawel FC.
