Northern Ireland next test for O’Brien
The Republic of Ireland Schools will line out tomorrow evening, Thursday, March 7 against Northern Ireland in the second of their International SAFIB Centenary Shield fixtures in Athlone Town AFC (KO 7pm)
Head Coach Derek O’Brien will be looking for the full points on offer having opened their campaign last Thursday night with a one all draw against Scotland. Brian Cunningham’s second half effort cancelling out a Freddie Rowe penalty converted on the stroke of half time.
Northern Ireland enjoyed a massive 3-0 win at home to England the week previous which is a bold statement in their ambitious endeavours this year. That big result sees them sitting top of the leader board coming into the third game of a ten-match series.
It’s early days in this season’s campaign but it will be the last home game for the Republic of Ireland team as they face tough opposition away from home next month. They’ll take on defending Joint Champions, England, and Wales. The squad will travel to Walsall FC on April 5 to play England while the Republic finish out the season on April 18 against Wales in Briton Ferry FC.
There is one change to O’Brien’s team that faced Scotland as Adam O’Halloran (Clarin College, Athenry) is forced out due to injury which will see Ardscoil na Mara, Tramore student Jack Ahern introduced to the 18-man panel.
In his debut season in charge, Derek O’Brien will be looking to leave a marker in the Midlands venue come Thursday night as the Republic hope to climb up the peaking order on the league table.
