Republic of Ireland vs England
Tomorrow (Tuesday, March 26, 2024) will mark the tenth meeting of these two sides in the John Ready Trophy, an annual fixture for these two Nations.
Previously it was a stand-alone fixture in the build up to the International tournament but in more recent years, it has formed part of the Bob Docherty Cup encounters to decide the winner.
Over the years, England have enjoyed the upper hand winning five out of the nine clashes. But in more recent times, Ireland have held their own with some outstanding performances to claim the silverware.
When it started back in 2014, the Irish suffered an 8-0 thumping in Maidstone United with young English starlets Russo and Stanway providing an exhibition of football for the Schools select.
The Republic of Ireland have had a raft of former Internationals involved over the years with Ellen MOLLOY (Presentation SS, Kilkenny) and Erin McLAUGHLIN (Carndonagh Community School) getting on the scoresheet in one particular fixture as well as Jessica ZIU (Larkin Community College), Jessie STAPLETON (Palmerstown CS), Tara O’HANLON (Castleknock CC), Abbie LARKIN (Ringsend College), Leanne KIERNAN (Bailieborough CS) and HEATHER PAYNE (Ardscoil Mhuire, Ballinasloe) all playing starring roles.
One player to feature last season and convert a penalty in Ireland’s one all draw with England was Madison McGUANE. The young Ardscoil Mhuire, Corbally scholar will captain her side tomorrow as the teams face off in Athlone Town AFC at 5pm.
