Moville Community College 3/1 St: Angela’s Ursuline Convent, Waterford
Reigning All Ireland Minor Champions Moville Community College produced a stunning display of attacking football to reclaim the coveted title against a spirited St: Angela’s of Waterford on Wednesday last (May 4) in Oriel Park:
Sally Anne McFadden’s girls took the game to Sean Foley’s side from the start to deservedly lead by a goal to nil at the break and they turned on the style in the second half to claim the ultimate prize:
However the Ulster stars didn’t have it all their way in a very competitive game which saw the Convent play a remarkably high standard of football which saw their supporters on their feet all the way to the final whistle:
The magically Moville School had previously won a Junior All Ireland title last month with quite a number of the players featuring at both levels and this experience was vital as they pressed the Munster contingency to the limit:
The industrious Naomi Douglas for the Saints had a brilliant start to the campaign as her darting runs were reaping dividends and she hit the post early on for Foley’s side to gain some early momentum:
Douglas’s early effort was cancelled out by Aine McLaughlin’s chance as her stunning effort was cleared off the line moments later:
It was Moville who registered the first of the afternoon as the talented Sarah Jane McDonald beat three defenders from the half way line to score a terrific goal low to the bottom corner:
The inform McDonald went close for her second but player of the match Labhaoire Dunbar was alert to the challenge and saved well under pressure:
Waterford star Douglas tested Danielle Clarke at the other end seconds later for the keeper to produce a fine save from close range:
End to end action with both teams creating some excellent chances in front of goal
U15 Schools International Aisling Frawley had an excellent opportunity to equalise late in the first period but her stinging shot was cleared off the line:
Stacey Doherty had the ball in the back of the net for Moville’s second of the half but it was ruled off side much to the frustration of Manager McFadden:
Moville had the upper hand as the interval approached with the Northerners edging the battle narrowly 1/0:
St: Angela’s enjoyed a strong period at the start of the second half but the ruthless finishing of Moville’s forwards was too much for them to handle with the impressive front pair of Roma McLaughlin and Sara Jane McDonald causing havoc for Sharon Browne, Rebecca Coleman and Ruthie Leavey:
Rebekah Henry played in Sarah Jane McDonald with a well executed pass from defence: McDonald had no hesitation as she slotted the ball past the well worked Dunbar to claim Moville’s second on 45 minutes:
Foley’s well managed outfit responded positively two minutes later as Douglas got one back for the mighty Munster side: An exciting few minutes followed:
With 51 minutes registered Roma McLaughlin had her screamer palmed wide as Dunbar was pressed time and time again: Namesake Aine McLaughlin pressed again four minutes later with another excellent save from the St: Angela’s netminder:
Dunbar was beaten for a third time just after the hour mark as Roma McLaughlin finally got through the resolve of keeper Dunbar to ensure the Minor Cup for Moville on a 3/1 scoreline:
Foley introduced a number of players to get back into contention with Doireann Flynn in for Browne, Pranvera Berisha for Murphy and Emily Unsworth for Kinsella Kent but unfortunately players such as the impressive Kathy McLaughlin, Leon Boyce, Rebekah Henry and Melissa McDermott were up for any challenge put in front of them from Hannah Walsh, Tara O’Brien and Naomi Douglas and the deadlock remained for Waterford as Moville did enough as the 70 minutes finally ticked down:
