The Interprovincial series is the first step in the process of selecting the FAI Schools International squad for next year’s Centenary Shield competition so as well as provincial honours, there is plenty at stake with sixty four of the top players in Irish schools taking part:
Munster will head to Dublin seeking to retain the title they captured twelve months previously: The Champions had a tough test with just their head to head with Connacht enabling them to take the honours following a pulsating conclusion to the tournament:
Manager Derek O’Brien (CBS Tramore) has a completely fresh squad at his disposal this season and he is eager to see how his young guns fair this time around: Preparations have been going well in the camp so only time will tell if their efforts will be rewarded for a second consecutive year:
Alan Murphy has had a similar rebuilding process in Connacht with just Liam Flately (Balla CS) the only returnee from 2012 but he is confident that his squad will be stronger this year and may even break through to winning ways this season having come very close in the last two seasons:
The Leinster squad shows a breadth of influence from throughout the province with John McShane selecting players from Tullamore, Maynooth, Celbridge, Leixlip as well as Drogheda and Dublin: McShane has Gregory Sloggett (St: Oliver’s CC, Drogheda) and Dylan Kavanagh (Salesian College) returning from last season to add some experience to the squad:
Ulster’s William O’Connor has four notable players making a welcome return to the tournament with Chris Flanagan (St: Eunan’s College), Ryan Varma, Georgie Kelly (both Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana) and Dara Black (Loreto CS, Milford) selected:
As part of the international trial process, a training squad will be selected by the Irish schools’ management team:
This training squad will have a major three day session at the end of the month as well as a number of sessions ahead of the first game of the international season which is scheduled for March 6 away to Wales
In keeping with the long/standing tradition of maintaining the interest in the competition until the final matches on Sunday, the draw for Saturday’s and Sunday’s matches will be made following the games on Friday evening:
