Joey’s progress to Cup Final

FAI Schools Umbro 1st Year Boys All Ireland Semi Final
Joey’s progress to Cup Final
Carndonagh Community School 0 – 0 St. Joseph’s CBS, Fairview (AET)
St. Joseph’s win 3 – 2 on penalties
There were jubilant scenes in Skreen, Sligo on Thursday afternoon as St. Joseph’s Fairview progressed to the Cup Final of the FAI Schools Umbro 1st Year Boys Competition.
Carndonagh should be very proud of their display in the semi final as it was the final kick of the ball that decided their faith.
The teams were very evenly balanced as the match remained scoreless at full time.
With extra time approaching, Carndonagh notched it up a gear. They had the first opportunity in extra time to carve out a real chance on goal. Jason Doherty combined well with Owen Bradley in the middle of the park to set up Odhran McColgan. McColgan’s effort from close range produced an excellent save from Joey’s keeper Lean Finnegan.
Joey’s responded with a strike on goal three minutes later but were unfortunate not to score when it was cleared off the line by defender James Theseira.
With no other breakthroughs in extra time the match ended 0 – 0.
It was anxious times for both teams as penalties beckoned. St. Joseph’s held their nerve to secure victory by the smallest of margins winning 3 - 2.
Ironically, Joey’s manager Fiona Barry is a native of Ballincollig in Co. Cork. She will lead out her charges to face Colaiste Cholim, Ballincollig in this year’s Umbro 1st Year Boys Cup Final which is scheduled for next week.
