Brown strike puts Moville through

Bank of Ireland FAI Schools Junior Girls National Cup Semi Final

Moville Community College 1-0 Athlone Community College

Kerry Brown (39)

A solidarity goal from Moville’s Kerry Brown early in the second half was enough to see off an impressive Athlone Community College in the Bank of Ireland FAI Schools Junior Girls National Cup semi-final in Monaghan United FC this afternoon (March 9)

It was a physical encounter between two top class sides as the fluid possession football of Moville was well evident in the opening exchanges. Kerry Brown’s long range effort was saved brilliantly from Megan Coolahan after just ten minutes of play. The rebound fell perfectly for Megan Havlin to rocket goal-ward but the woodwork denied the youngster.

Aoibh Faulkner was next to test Coolahan but again the Athlone shot-stopper pulled off another excellent save.

Athlone were just finding their form before the interval as Róise Lennon’s header was palmed to safety by Moville’s number one, Clodagh Skelly as the first half ended scoreless.

The deadlock was broken four minutes into the restart as a long ball from Faulkner was played into Havlin who dispatched effortlessly to the on-running Brown. She side-stepped the keeper to slot home the match-winner.

The Westmeath contingency had a wonderful second half and played some exceptional football but just couldn’t convert. Angelina De Rosa hit the side-netting while Grace Hannon and Aimee O’Connor were denied by some good goalkeeping from inform Skelly.

The Midlands net-minder Megan Coolahan put in a match winning performance but couldn’t do anything about the flawless finish of U15 Schools’ International Brown when her time came to pounce.

The Donegal crew lost the Bank of Ireland Senior Cup encounter a fortnight ago as they went down two nil to Munster kingpins Presentation SS, Thurles so they’ll be hoping for better fortunes in Home Farm FC on Wednesday when they take on the talented Claregalway College in this season’s Final. Kick-off is at 1pm in the Whitehall venue.
