Late win for St. Eunan’s over Athenry in Dr. Tony O'Neill Cup Semi Final

FAI Schools Dr. Tony O’Neill National Senior Cup Semi Final

Tuesday, March 22, 2022

Presentation College, Athenry 0-1 St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny (AET)

DAVID BOAKYE of St. Eunan’s College was the match day hero for the Ulster kingpins as they saw off an impressive Presentation College, Athenry in Ballisodare United FC this afternoon (March 22)

The only goal of the game came in the last few minutes of extra time following a scoreless ninety minutes of action.

Boakye headed home from close range following an Adam Murphy set piece from the left wing. The curling ball was headed initially by Fouad Bashar before Boakye got his head to the end of it and into the back of the Athenry net.

Ironically these two schools were involved in National Cup Finals before the COVID-19 pandemic caused a halt to proceedings two years ago.

St. Eunan’s were in contention for the Dr. Tony O’Neill Senior title with Cork outfit Douglas Community School.

While, Presentation College, Athenry were in the running with Salesian College, Celbridge to lift the Tom TIcher Junior Cup.

The spoils were shared for all four Schools in 2020.

However St. Eunan’s have a chance of claiming the silverware outright two years on! Only De La Salle College, Waterford or St. Mary’s CBS of Enniscorthy stand in their way. That other semi-final outing will be played this Thursday in Ferrycarrig Park, Wexford at 1pm.

St. Eunan’s College will be bolstered by the re-introduction of goalkeeper Fintan Doherty as he missed out on this afternoon’s events with his current involvement with the Republic of Ireland Under-17s.

The FAI Schools Dr. Tony O’Neill National Senior Cup Final is scheduled for Wednesday, April 6 at 1pm.
