A summary of the FAI Schools National Cup Champions 2023/24

The FAI Schools Post Primary Schools National Cup competitions are nearing completion this season with 14 of the 16 National Cup competitions reaching a conclusion. The other two National Cup Finals will take place at the start of the next academic year in September.
FAI Schools organise National Cups in the boys and girls section, with 8 divisions apiece catering for small and large schools tailored for Under 20, 19, 17, 15 and 14 age groups.
Each provincial branch will also offer an extensive local League structure co-ordinated by teachers voluntarily.
The series of competitions provide football to over 600 post primary schools nationwide with almost 80,000 students participating annually.
Galway won 4 of the 7 girls titles on offer as well as Sligo, Leitrim and Tipperary claiming the other honours. An impressive campaign for Presentation College, Athenry managing to capture a double in the Junior and Minor divisions.
While in the boys section, there were two National titles apiece for three Counties with Donegal, Dublin and Mayo all picking up top spot while Cork outfit St. Peter’s also made the headlines.

PRESENTATION SECONDARY SCHOOL, THURLES overcame reigning Champions Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana to clinch the National Senior title following some extra-time heroics in Rock Celtic FC, Dundalk on Monday, March 4.
Both goalkeepers Caitlin Shelly, Thurles and Hollie Ferguson, Buncrana were in exceptional form to keep the deadlock for so long after sustained pressure from both sides.
But Molly O’Dwyer’s half volley early in the second period of extra time was to prove the master class for the Tipp side as Barry Ryan clinched a third victory in this grade having previously captured the National crown in 2018 and 2016.
Senior ‘B’ Cup
St. Clare’s Comprehensive School, Manorhamilton 3-1 Coláiste Mhuire, Askeaton

ST. CLARE’S COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL, MANORHAMILTON captured their first ever National Cup title when they overcame a resilient Colaiste Mhuire, Askeaton in the FAI Schools Senior ‘B’ Girls National Cup Final in Athlone Town AFC on Wednesday, January 31.
Manorhamilton got the dream start when the industrious Áine McLaughlin converted within the opening minute. She unleashed a powerful strike from the left wing which the keeper couldn’t hold onto as the ball trickled into the back of the net
Coláiste Mhuire equalised as half-time beckoned. Grace Fitzgibbon lofted the ball into the danger zone for colleague Gemma Leahy to slot home from close range.
The Leitrim side netted a second just after the hour mark. Megan Rooney broke free on the left flank to see the keeper off her line so she attempted a marvellous lob which sensationally smashed the back of the net.
With nine minutes remaining, Captain Lauren Devaney got their third with a fabulous individually effort leaving Neville no chance between the posts.
An historic day for both teams as they reached their first National Cup Final. St. Clare’s were just more clinical with some sublime goals to take the silverware.
Junior Cup
Presentation College, Athenry 2-1 Athlone Community College

PRESENTATION COLLEGE, ATHENRY defeated local outfit Athlone Community College in a fantastic showcase to claim the FAI Schools Junior Girls National Cup in Athlone Town AFC on Wednesday, March 13.
Mollie NOONE opened the scoring 7 minutes from the interval as she struck a sweet effort off her left peg to give Athenry the edge.
Under 15 Schools International Abbie DUFFY scored direct from a 30 yard free kick to silence the massive Athlone crowd with her sensational set-piece to double the Pres tally in the second minute of added time.
Presentation College led 2-0 at the interval.
It was Ciara WALSH’s goal on 54 minutes that sparked a massive change in the Athlone crew as her low drive managed to sneak past Gilligan’s bottom corner to take it to within reach for the Leinster Champions as they trailed 2-1.
It was an exciting encounter which nearly went to the wire as Athlone’s late comeback in the final ten minutes made for a nail-biting conclusion to this season’s Cup decider.
Junior ‘B’ Cup
Coola Post Primary School 1-0 Coláiste Mhuire, Askeaton
Aoibhin Doherty (26)
COOLA POST PRIMARY SCHOOL near Riverstown in Sligo came through a sensational encounter against Coláiste Mhuire, Askeaton to claim the Junior ‘B’ Girls National title in Athlone Town AFC on Friday, March 8.
Coola’s Aoibhin DOHERTY provided the only goal of the game on 26 minutes as a defensive error with Coláiste Mhuire saw the First Year scholar with time on the ball to pick her spot beautifully.
Heartbreak for Coláiste Mhuire as they lost out to St. Clare’s CS, Manorhamilton in the Senior ‘B’ Girls National Cup Final at the end of January in the same venue.
It’s now a second National football title for the Sligo outfit. The girls from Coola Post Primary School have emulated the 2022 success of the boys as they captured the Junior ‘B’ Boys Cup following a 3-2 victory over Scoil Ruáin, Killanaule to claim a first National title for the School. No doubt there are many more National titles in the offing for these young starlets.
Minor ‘B’ Cup
Glenamaddy Community School 4-0 Midleton College

GLENAMADDY COMMUNITY SCHOOL were crowned FAI Schools Minor ‘B’ Girls National Cup Champions following their stunning victory over Midleton College in Fairview Rangers FC on Wednesday, April 24).
Two goals in either half was enough to see John Kennedy’s side claim the silverware with an empathic team performance.
Their goal-scoring prowess continued as McGuire and O’Toole both netted braces in this victory with Midleton keeper Ellie O’Leary pulling off several saves late on to keep the Galway crew at bay.
It brings to 17 the number of goals scored in their last 3 outings, conceding just once to Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair in the National semi-final. An outstanding record in this competition.
Minor Cup
Presentation College, Athenry 3-0 Kingswood Community College

PRESENTATION COLLEGE, ATHENRY captured the FAI Schools Minor Girls National Cup following a super second half display to overpower Leinster stars Kingswood Community College in Athlone Town AFC on Wednesday, May 8.
This was the second title for Presentation College this season as they captured the Junior Girls National Cup last month at the same venue to complete an impressive double.
There was nothing to separate the two sides as it was scoreless at half time with very little on target but a pulsating second half for the Connacht side saw them explode into life. Under 15 Schools’ International Abbie DUFFY was the hero of the ‘half-hour’ as her hat-trick guaranteed top spot for Athenry.
The first of the trio of goals came just three minutes into the second half with a beauty from Duffy to see past a busy Sophie Farrell between the posts for the Tallaght school.
Duffy’s second was six minutes later as she converted from the penalty spot. The third goal came on 41 minutes when she produced a delightful free kick from 25 yards out to see the ball go over Farrell’s head and in to capture the title.
First Year Cup
Salerno Secondary School, Salthill 2-1 St. Mary’s Secondary School, New Ross

SALERNO SECONDARY SCHOOL, SALTHILL were crowned FAI Schools First Year Girls National Cup Champions in Leah Victoria Park, Tullamore Town FC on Wednesday, May 22.
The Galway crew hung onto their first half led to capture the title after an epic battle with St. Mary’s from New Ross. The talented Ana CONWAY converted a delightful free kick from the edge of the box into the top corner after just eight minutes to give the Connacht stars the lead.
Salerno doubled their tally on the quarter hour as Orna DUNNE finished off a smart run through the centre of the Wexford defence to slot past Myler.
However, St. Mary’s did respond two minutes from the break to grab a vital goal with Ava WILSON striking the ball beautifully to see past Heinz Ward to make it 1-2 at the interval.
New Ross keeper Abbie Myler pulled off a brilliant save to deny the troublesome Tilly Carroll two minutes into the second period. Captain Dearbhla Ryan and Molly Ryan had chances midway through the half to equalise but Roisin Heinz Ward was equal to the challenge and Salerno managed the game out to win the silverware.

A historic day for SCOIL MHUIRE as they claimed the prestigious Dr. Tony O’Neill Senior Cup for the first time in the Schools history. The Buncrana boys netted two second half goals to overcome Dublin side Belvedere College in the Showgrounds, Sligo on Wednesday, April 10.
It was a cagey opening forty five with neither side making major inroads.
Belvedere’s Billy Canny forced Stephen McNulty into a great save midway through the first half. While six minutes later, it was Shaunie Bradley who had a header on target but Christian Loftus palmed it away to safety. All coming from a beautifully weighted free kick from Conor McDaid.
The industrious Mark Isong was causing concern but had no real threat on the Donegal goal.
The deadlock was broken twenty minutes into the second period when Conor Graham played a delightful ball into Shaunie BRADLEY who slotted home the opener.
The Buncrana lead was doubled eight minutes later as Darragh Coyle was taken down inside the box and Captain Conor GRAHAM converted the resulting penalty to make it 2-0.
Belvedere just couldn’t impress on the game as their recent form in the provincial stages eluded them. Fiachra Sheridan made several changes with a quarter of an hour remaining but they couldn’t break down the Buncrana defence.
John Murphy Cup
St. Peter’s CS, Passage West 5-2 Glenamaddy CS

ST. PETER’S COMMUNITY SCHOOL, PASSAGE WEST put in a sensational second half performance to see past Glenamaddy Community School in Athlone Town AFC on Tuesday, February 6.
All seven goals came in the second half as both Ross Hegarty and Eduardo Bessone were in superb form to keep a clean sheet in the first forty-five.
The breakthrough came three minutes into the second half as Kristian O’Callaghan played in Liam QUINN to slot home a peach of an opener.
Their tally was doubled six minutes later when Darragh Lehane played a super ball for Kristian O’Callaghan to head on target, but Hegarty saved well however it dropped perfectly for Rema MBAKWE to smash in.
Glenamaddy responded with a quarter of an hour left when Eoin Collins forced Bessone into a wonderful stop, but Eoin MORGAN was on hand to grab a vital goal to bring the game to 2-1.
Seconds later, Passage West extended their two-goal cushion as O’Callaghan fed Rema Mbakwe on the edge of the box. The talisman was exceptionally quick on his feet to round the defender and finally beat the diving keeper for MBAKWE’s second and St. Peter’s third. A real sucker punch for the Galway side.
A fourth was added for St. Peter’s with seven minutes remaining as initial shots from Mbakwe and Farrell were saved brilliantly by Hegarty, but the ball came out to Liam QUINN who drove it to the back of the net for his second of the day.
Glenamaddy were awarded a corner in the 89th minute with substitute John O’BRIEN nodding in to bring it to 4-2.
However, Passage West were to go five up when Rema MBAKWE was fouled in the box and dispatched the subsequent penalty to secure his hat-trick.
Tom Ticher Cup
Rice College, Westport 0-1 Portmarnock CS

A solitary goal was enough to see Portmarnock Community School stun defending Champions Rice College, Westport in Athlone Town AFC on Wednesday, April 17 to take the Tom Ticher National Cup.
There was very little between the sides throughout the 80 minutes as Rice College piled on the pressure late on but Kyle Grainger was immense for the Portmarnock scholars between the posts.
The only goal of the game came within four minutes as Cian WILSON’S strike from 20 yards out seemed to deceive Michael McDonnell in the Westport goal as the ball nestled into the bottom corner.
Junior ‘B’ Cup
Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair 5-1 Gaelcholáiste Reachrann, Domhnach Míde

POBALSCOIL GHAOTH DOBHAIR put in an incredible performance to see them claim a second consecutive National title in the FAI Schools Junior ‘B’ Boys National Cup decider against Gaelcholáiste Reachrann, Domhnach Míde in Rock Celtic FC, Dundalk on Tuesday, March 5.
A first half brace courtesy of the inform Brian Mac Pháidín saw him convert from the penalty spot with ten minutes on the clock and his second was superbly taken seven minutes later to give the Ulster side a two goal advantage at half-time.
Jordi Gribben scored a third on 48 minutes.
A disappointing day for Gaelcholáiste Reachrann who lost their Captain Scott Ó Casaide Mac Siulaí due to injury shortly after the third goal was conceded.
However, the Dublin side grabbed one back just before the hour mark with a lovely finish from Odhran Ó Connaill cutting in the right wing.
Two late goals in added time was to slightly flatter the score-line with Gribben netting a fourth in two minutes added time while substitute Fionn Ó Cnáimhsí popped up for a fifth two minutes later.
Minor Cup
St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny 2-4 Moyle Park College, Clondalkin

MOYLE PARK COLLEGE, CLONDALKIN came from behind twice to snatch the FAI Schools Minor Boys National Cup title as they overpowered St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny in Athlone Town AFC on Wednesday, May 15.
It was a pulsating conclusion to this season’s Cup campaign as new kids on the block Moyle Park College showed their winning flare late on to secure a first ever National Cup for the school.
The opening goal came on 22 minutes as a long ball from Crossan was controlled beautifully by Finn NOLAN who bet two defenders to round the ball past Homan in the Clondalkin goalmouth.
Clondalkin’s equaliser came three minutes from the interval as Alex SNOW struck the back of the Eunan’s net for one apiece.
St. Eunan’s Captain Davin KELLY pulled off an incredible strike just on the stroke of half-time to take a slender 2-1 lead into the break.
It took Moyle Park College thirteen minutes into the re-start to claim another valuable equaliser with David NGESI converting from the penalty spot for 2-2.
Moyle Park then took the lead for the first time in the match as David NGESI added a third for the Dubliners and his second of the afternoon with 53 minutes played.
Desmond ARMSTRONG made sure of the win when he caught St. Eunan’s off guard to slot home in the third minute of added time, finishing brilliantly for 4-2.
Minor ‘B’ Cup
Balla Secondary School 5-0 Grange Community College, Donaghmede

BALLA SECONDARY SCHOOL outplayed Donaghmede scholars Grange Community College in the FAI Schools Minor ‘B’ Boys National Cup Final in Athlone Town AFC on Wednesday, May 1.
The Mayo crew were two up inside the first 11 minutes when Tony CUNNINGHAM slotted past the talented Timurs Rjaguzovs after ten minutes. Cunningham’s first came courtesy of team-mate Ryan Judge who sprayed the ball goal bound for Tony to ensure the tap in. His second was just after the re-start when in headed in perfectly from a high ball over the top.
Rocco Lawlor forced a great saved from Noah Murphy just before the interval as it remained 2-0 to Balla at the break
Grange needed to start on the front foot if they were to mount a come-back in this Cup tie but Ryan JUDGE dashed any hopes of a resurgence as he netted within a minute of the re-start. An inch perfect finish from an acute angle to take the Balla tally to three.
It was 47 minutes in when Ryan Cunningham forced another super save from the Grange keeper while Rocco Lawlor hit the post at the other end. A minute later, Dylan DUNNE headed in from a Ryan Cunningham cross to make it 4-0. With the game nearly up, DUNNE netted his second of the afternoon and Balla’s fifth with an outrageous strike to the top corner to ensure a comprehensive victory in the Midlands.
First Year Cup
St. Gerald’s College, Castlebar 2-1 Willow Park Senior School, Blackrock (AET)

ST. GERALD’S COLLEGE, CASTLEBAR defeated debutants Willow Park Senior School from Blackrock in extra-time to claim the FAI Schools First Year Boys National Cup in Athlone Town AFC on Thursday, May 23.
Matthew DALY opened the scoring six minutes into the second half to give St. Gerald’s the lead. A mistake in the Blackrock defence saw Daly steal the ball inside the box and drill an audacious shot under the diving Ben Walls.
Blackrock were impressive going forward as Paddy Mullaney, Sam Cruz, Thomas Kilty and Ronan McDonagh linked up well at times. But St. Gerald’s had Blackrock talisman’s Arya Golchin well marshalled throughout proceedings.
Peter Quinlan used his bench effectively as Blake and Horne were introduced and the deadly duo linked up well for the elusive equaliser eight minutes from time. Jamie BLAKE latched onto an excellent through ball from Archie Horne for the latter to finish superbly and bring the game to extra-time.
Ben Walls pulled off some exceptional saves early in the first period of added time when he denied Keating, Mulroy, Reilly and Moran in quick succession with Jack Fitzgerald on the line to clear the danger for the Leinster Champions.
The match winner came two minutes into the second period of extra-time as a well worked manoeuvre saw St. Gerald’s convert in fine fashion. Eddie Moran snatched the ball on the right flank and played it into the path of Ruairi Molloy who pushed it forward to Cillian Keating. A quick one-two, saw MULROY claim the pass again and he slotted it past the impressive Ben Walls for a worthy match winner.
