February 20, 2014
THE MONAGHAN PRIMARY SCHOOLS FUTSAL FINALS were held in the impressive Phoenix Centre in Carrickmacross last Thursday (February 13)
A total of thirteen schools entered the competition this year with 20 teams competing in both the boys and girls sections: A total of 240 children from both third and fourth class signed up to try out the indoor version of 5-a-side football recommended by UEFA:
Carrick Rovers Football Club were the proud sponsors of this year’s competition once again:

The lads competition was an exciting one and a very close one to call: Last year’s winners Broomfield were favourites to become champions once again but the new up and coming teams had the slight advantage of been underdog’s:
After some very good close games it was two newcomers Drumgossat & St: Enda’s NS ofScotshouse and last year’s winners Broomfield who emerged as group winners, this would mean the teams would battle it out in the finals:
Newcomers Scotshouse came out on top and claimed 1st place and Drumgossat a close 2nd:
Teacher of St: Enda’s NS, Mr: Danny Mc Carney was delighted to be bringing home the title at their first attempt:
GIRLS SECTION

The girl’s event was as exciting if not more with Scoil Rois claiming top spot with tough wins against the other two group winners Gaeilscoil Ultain and Knockconan NS:
A penalty shoot out was needed for Knockonan to qualify as group winners one which didn’t seem to affect them as they calmly took their chances:
Scoil Rois were crowned champions after narrowly beating the other finalists by one goal but after a long day of convincing displays they deserved it:
Once again the competition proved to be a great success with several exciting games with many of the skills of futsal clearly on display:
Many thanks once gain to the Phoenix Centre for use of their excellent facility to referee Noel Hand for his expert officiating and MIFET Sports and Leisure student Noel Prunty for his assistance on the day:
John Crudden, FAI Development Officer for Monaghan issued a big thank you to all the participating schools and finally to Carrick Rovers FC for their generous sponsorship and support of the FAI Schools Programme
