St. Francis College capture SAFIB Allen McKinstry Cup
Saturday, May 25, 2024
ST. FRANCIS COLLEGE, ROCHESTOWN captured the SAFIB Allen McKinstry Cup following a tremendous performance against their English counterparts Shenfield High School in Cardiff this afternoon (May 25, 2024)
The Essex students went into the game with two wins from two as they saw off Northern Ireland scholars Lurgan High School 2-1 in their first outing on Thursday afternoon while St. Francis College only drew one apiece with Welsh outfit Whitchurch High School after Cillian ROSS drew them level late on. The Cork school grabbed a bonus point following a 10-9 penalty shoot-out win when the schools drew level following full time.
Roco goalkeeper Alex McEVOY was announced as the Player of the Match following his heroic save to deny Whitchurch penalty taker while he slotted home himself for the winner.
In the other fixture on Match Day One, it saw Redden Court overcome Y Strade 3-0.
The second games on Friday saw Shenfield High School come through a seven goal thriller against Welsh side Y Strade 4-3 to net the three points on offer while St. Francis College had a narrow 1-0 win against Romford stars Redden Court courtesy of Colm TYNAN’S match winner.
This set up a final outing with Shenfield this morning. The English Champions perhaps edging the favourities tag going into the decider.
However, goals from Cillian ROSS and Darragh LYNCH ensured a two nil win against Shenfield to ensure the silverware was heading to Cork.
Darragh LYNCH was superb for the Cork side and was awarded the Player of the Match following the extraordinary victory.
In the other play-off games Lurgan picked up their first win of the series with a 5-0 performance against Redden Court while Whitchurch won 3-1 against Y Strade in an all Welsh affair.
PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT
The icing on the cake was when Darragh O’FLAHERTY was named as Player of the Tournament following the final series of games on Saturday afternoon
PREVIOUS IRISH CHAMPIONS
Since its establishment in 2008, the Republic of Ireland representatives have had some notable successes winning on three previous occasions.
The most recent victory came in 2016 when St. Kieran’s College, Kilkenny claimed glory with Douglas Community School coming runners up that season in the AUL Complex, Dublin.
Oranmore’s Calasanctius College were crowned Champions having captured top spot in Belfast in 2015. Those included in the squad that day were Adam Rooney, Aaron Connolly and Ronan Manning.
Before that, when FAI Schools hosted on home soil in 2012, it was the turn of Ulster crew St. Eunan’s College, Letterkenny taking the title as the AUL Complex, Clonshaugh facilitated the tournament.
