Winners announced for Schools' International POTY Awards

Patton & McGuane named Schools’ International Players of the Year

Thursday, November 14, 2024

The 34th FAI International Football Award winners were announced this evening ahead of the WNT fixture against Finland in the Aviva Stadium, Dublin.

Former Summerhill College, Sligo scholar Daire PATTON was named Under 18 Boys’ Schools’ International Player of the Year while Madison McGUANE a pupil in Ardscoil Mhuire, Corbally picked up the Under 15 Girls’ Schools’ accolade.  A fantastic acknowledge of the youngster’s endeavours in the green jersey.

Patton had an excellent season for Derek O’Brien’s Under 18 Boys' Republic of Ireland Schools squad. His impressive performances saw him lead out the students against Australia at the start of the year. He scored in Ireland’s 3-0 win away to Wales and claimed Player of the Match for his brilliant performance against England. The midfielder is currently enjoying his football at Sligo Rovers having moved there from St. John’s FC aged 12.  His recent form has seen him called up to Tom Mohan’s squad for the UEFA European Under 19 Championship Qualifiers this week in Moldova. No doubt this is one of many honours for the Sligo native.

Daire is the second student from Summerhill College to receive the prestigious gong as Conor O’GRADY was the recipient back in 1999.

The boys achievements have been duly publicised since 1990 at this level and although the girls International squads have been in existence since 2002, it was only in 2019 when the FAI added the Under 15s Girls’ Schools’ category to the list.

Madison will be the fourth female player to receive such an endorsement with previous winners including Jessie STAPLETON (Palmerstown CS), Hannah HEALY (Holy Faith SS, Clontarf) and Abigail BRADSHAW (St. Colmcille’s CS, Knocklyon). The Limerick starlet was exceptional for Richie Berkeley’s squad. It was her second season involved with the Republic of Ireland. McGuane captained the team in their 3-1 victory over Northern Ireland in an International Friendly in March while scoring a brace that afternoon. She also wore the armband against Scotland and England in the Bob Docherty Cup. The Ardscoil Mhuire student has plenty of experience gained at such a young age. She has kicked on having been capped at Under 16s level and is currently abroad with James Scott’s crew as they compete in the UEFA Women’s Under 17 European Championship Round 1 Qualifiers in Spain. She made the move from local side Pike Rovers to Treaty United last year and is going from strength to strength on the playing field.

Unbelievably it was Madison’s second nomination of the evening, having also been selected for Women’s Under 16 International Player of the Year alongside Aoife SHERIDAN and her good friend and eventual winner Ella KELLY. It shows the pedigree of player Madison is, to be selected twice in the same year in two different age categories.

We congratulate the other nominees as Hugh PARKER (Temple Carrig School, Greystones, Wicklow) and Callum HONOHAN (Edmund Rice College, Carrigaline, Cork) were nominated in the Under 18 Boys’ category while Mia MURTAGH (Mercy Secondary School, Ballymahon, Longford) and Sophie BYRNE (Coláiste Chiaráin, Athlone, Westmeath) were selected in the Under 15 Girls’ division.
