The Donegal Finals of the FAI Schools Primary School’s Futsal competition for boys and girls in 3rd and 4th classes were held in the Aura Centre, Letterkenny on Thursday, 10 December:
The finalist who had come through their area sections were delighted to be participating and were all determined to be the first winners of this FAI School’s initiative to get younger kids playing futsal:
The girls section was first to kick off with Lurgybrack and Glenties beating Castlefin and Greencastle in the opening games:
Greencastle then showed a lot of character when coming from behind to pick up their first point after scoring two late goals against Castlefin:
In the other game Glenties continued their winning ways with a 2/0 win over Lurgybrack:
This set up a winner take all final game between Glenties and Castlefin with Greencastle needing to win their final game to have any hope of clinching runners up stop:
Glenties showed no mercy and ran out convincing winners and deserving to be crowned Donegal Champions and with Greencastle also winning well it meant they clinched second on goal difference:
The boys section was no less exciting and was all up for grabs going into the final series of games:
Carndonagh and Woodlands National School went into their final game level on points after both had won their opening two games against Castlefin and Glenties respectively:
Woodlands got off to the perfect start when scoring after 2 minutes but with Carndonagh equalizing just before half time the game was perfectly set up: The turning point of the game came with three minutes remaining when Carndonagh seemingly getting on top, the Woodlands goalkeeper made two fantastic saves to keep his team in the game: This seemed to give Woodlands the boost they needed as from then on they dominated the game and ran out convincing 3/1 winners:
In the fight for third place Castlefin recorded a slender win over Glenties:
FAI Development Officers Stephen McNutt and Trevor Scanlon who organized this competition were delighted with the standard of both sections:
They thanked the Errigal College PLC students for their help in running the event and also the Aura Centre for use of their facilities: They also thanked the Principals and teachers of all the schools involved for supporting the competition:
