The biggest and best competition in the 2011

Primary School Soccer Calendar

The finals of the Donegal Area National Primary School 5-a-side competition took place on Wednesday and Thursday with 20 teams fighting it out to represent their area in the Ulster Final which will take place on Thursday next, May 19 in Cootehill Harps FC, Cavan:

All sections where played in a tremendous spirit and with no shortage of skill:

Section “A” in the boys seen teams from Cashel & Moyle National School in Newtown fighting it out for top spot: Both went into the final game level on four points with Cashel gaining a vital 2/1 victory to secure their place in the Ulster Finals:

Section “A” in the girls was a fantastic group with all teams showing why they have reached the area finals:

Castlefin starting well against strong favourites Glenties only to be pull back late in the game and losing 2/1 in the dying moments: Cashel Girls were looking to complete the double and started off superbly winning their first two games:

This set up an all or nothing showdown against Glenties who had secured a 4/2 win against Acres National School from Burtonport:

The two teams went into the final game knowing that a draw would mean Glenties would qualify: Within two minutes the game was secured as Glenties raced to a 3/0 lead which they held until 2 minutes remaining when they added a fourth to progress:

Section “B” Boys saw St: Baiten’s of St: Johnston qualify out a tough group which also went to the final game:

Ramelton had won their first two games and with St: Baitins already having dropped a point they produced a fantastic second half performance scoring 4 goals to claim victory by 4 goals to 1 and qualifying for the Provincial Finals:

Sections B Girls saw Illistrin NS from Letterkenny defeat Woodlands, Kilmacrennan and draw with Ballyraine to secure their spot:

Section “C” Boys was another evenly contested group with Gaelscoil, Letterkenny running out eventual winners after securing victory in all there games but only by the odd goal in all three games:

Lurgybrack form Letterkenny finished on 4 points but had led in all three games at half time but it was the strength of the Gaelscoil squad that proved decisive as any changes did not seem to weaken them on the day:

Development Officers Stephen McNutt and Trevor Scanlon thanked all the schools who participated in this year’s programme and of course the teachers who take the time to work with the children preparing them for the competition every year:

They also thanked Terry Ledan and the Donegal Junior League for the use of their facilities and finished by wishing the winners the best of luck next Thursday when they travel to Cavan to compete with the Monaghan, Cavan and Inishowen winners for the Ulster crown:
