288 players representing 24 qualifying schools will participate in this year’s Post Primary Schools Leinster Futsal Finals in the marvellous surrounds of Gormanston College, Meath on Tuesday next, 16 November.
The Post Primary Schools futsal competition is in its second year nationally after a successful pilot programme. The competition caters for first year students with both boys and girls categories catered for.
Each team have come through their respective county qualifying events to get to this Provincial stage, the Leinster Finals.
In the Leinster qualifiers, we have two successful schools defending their Provincial titles with Moyne Community College winning the girls title last time around and going on to claim the elusive All Ireland crown while Wexford CBS claimed the Leinster boy’s title.
No strangers to the competition will be Dublin Oak (Wicklow) and Grennan College (Kilkenny) in the boys section and St. Brendan’s Community College, Birr and Eureka Secondary School, Kells all making a welcome return in the girls section. These schools’ participation last year in the event was to a very high standard so they should bring an impressive array of skill to the finals this time around.
Longford will be represented by Moyne Community College for both the boys and girls competitions. The pressure will be on the Moyne girls’ team to replicate the good fortunate of last year.
Also making a double representation is Westmeath qualifiers Wilson's Hospital School, Multyfarnham. Both the girls and boys teams were unbeaten in their County Finals in Athlone last week so they will be quietly confident of doing a good job at the next level up.
One player to watch out for is Wilson's Rachel Shaw. Rachel started as a substitute then scored 10 of the 12 goals Wilson's struck in the competition. She also took the corner that lead to an own goal while Samia Ennis also scored to record a remarkable tally. This strike partnership of Ennis and Shaw will make for a pulsating encounter for their opponents.
Unfortunately Carlow failed to qualify two schools for the events so Wexford have two qualifiers in each section with Wexford CBS and Gorey Community School representing the boys and Ramsgrange, New Ross and Gorey CS making the cut for the girls.
Louth’s Dundalk Grammar School will have their boys and girls teams participating while Offaly’s Tullamore College and St. Brendan’s CC of Birr represent the boys and girls respectively.
Dublin’s new entries will include Larkin CC for the boys and Sword’s St. Finian’s in the girls section.
Mountrath CS and Scoil Chriost Ri will complete the Laois entry while Wicklow’s Dublin Oak and Colaiste Chraobh Abhann will participate for the garden county.
Host County Meath have the experienced St. Peter’s College, Dunboyne and the highly competitive Eureka Secondary School in Kells competing for the coveted title.
The competition is wide open with 20 schools in contention for some of the silverware on offer on Tuesday next. All schools are requested to be in attendance for registration at 10:30am with games kicking off at 11am sharp.
