Thursday, May 4, 2023

There were six big winners in the FAI Primary School 5s North Leinster Finals which took place in the MDL Grounds, Navan yesterday (Wednesday, May 3).

Schools from Louth, Longford, Meath and Westmeath challenged for the Regional title up for grabs and surprisingly three Meath and three Westmeath Schools won gold. The six section winners now advance to the provincial stages next Wednesday, May 10 in the same venue.

The ‘A’ Cup, open to boys and/or mixed teams from small schools, saw St. Brigid’s NS, Cortown, Meath claim a podium finish with three wins from three, scoring 17 goals and only conceding three. Westmeath stars Milltown NS gave a splendid account of themselves and deservedly picked up a runners up medal.

The ‘B’ Cup for medium schools was another titanic battle with some tough encounters.  Gaelscoil na Mhuilinn, Westmeath shone brightest with two wins and one defeat in their group to claim gold while Dangan NS, Meath came a close second in a highly entertaining group.

The large schools category, the ‘C’ Cup produced a wonderful display from the students as St. Colman’s NS, Westmeath claimed three wins from three to take the title. St. Stephen’s NS, Meath came a gallant runners up.

Ardnagrath NS, Westmeath were crowned Girls ‘A’ Cup Champions following a stunning outing in the Meath venue with three wins from three. Louth’s Bellurgan NS got on the podium with a runners up spot guaranteed with two wins and one defeat to the eventual winners.

The medium schools in the Girls ‘B’ Cup was won by Bohermeen NS, Meath while Scoil Mhuire of Longford came second in the group.

The Girls ‘C’ Cup for large schools saw St Colmcille’s SNS, Kells, Meath collect the top prize with some solid performances from the girls. Namesake St. Colmcille’s NS in Longford clinched the runners up spot in a brilliant grouping.

The Leinster Finals will see winners from Mid, South and North Leinster as well as Dublin looking to secure their place in the National Finals which is set to take place in the Aviva Stadium, Dublin on Wednesday, May 31. We wish all participating schools the every best of luck at the next stage of competition.
