Kilkenny Schools the big winners at the Mid Leinster Primary 5s Finals Day in Portlaoise

There were six big winners in the FAI Primary School 5s Mid Leinster Finals which took place in Portlaoise Leisure Centre yesterday (Wednesday, May 3).
Schools from Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois and Offaly challenged for the Regional title up for grabs and three Kilkenny Schools won gold while two Kildare and one Offaly School advance to the provincial stages next Wednesday, May 10 in the MDL Grounds, Navan, Meath.
The ‘A’ Cup, open to boys and/or mixed teams from small schools, saw Scoil San Nioclás, Windgap, Kilkenny advance with two wins and a draw in the group. Laois outfit Mayo NS were runners up following two wins and a defeat to the eventual winners.
The ‘B’ Cup for medium schools saw St. Colman’s NS of Mucklagh capture gold with three wins from three, scoring 10 goals and only conceding once. Second spot was secured by the impressive Our Lady’s Meadow, Laois.
The large schools category, the ‘C’ Cup pipped Scoil Bhríde, Kilcullen as the gold medalists following a comprehensive performance for the Kildare scholars. Bunscoil McAuley Rice, Callan picked up silver.
The Girls only section saw the small schools, Girls ‘A’ Cup produce some exciting games with Moneenore NS, Kilkenny winning out with two wins and one draw. The runners up were Gaelscoil Éadan Doire of Offaly.
The medium schools in the Girls ‘B’ Cup was more equally posed with St. John’s Senior NS advancing. Scoil Shincill picked up second spot on the day.
The Girls ‘C’ Cup for large schools had Scoil Uí Riada convincing winners with a brilliant display from the Kildare crew. The runners up were more difficult to decipher with St. Canice’s NS snatching silver on a slender goal difference.
The Leinster Finals will see winners from Mid, South, North Leinster as well as Dublin looking to secure their place in the National Finals which is set to take place in the Aviva Stadium, Dublin on Wednesday, May 31. We wish all participating schools the every best of luck at the next stage of competition.
