Wilson's Hospital School made the trek from Westmeath to the Beaufort College Navan pitch on Friday last (December 2) with a good mix of youth and experience for this match, the first Girls U17 League encounter reports Gavan Kierans (WHS)
Beaufort started off well with their first attack: Beaufort's Emma Donohoe was through one on one with the WHS goalie, Jessica Shekleton, but Donohoe's shot clipped the top of the bar:
The first ten minutes were tight with both teams trying to settle into the game:
The breakthrough came when Wilson's captain, Lauren Payne, got around the Beaufort defence to start off a fantastic individual display:
From that point on Wilson's took full advantage scoring five goals in the first half:
Emma Donohoe worked tirelessly for Beaufort College for the entire game and her efforts were rewarded with a goal in the second half:
Beaufort College's keeper Amanda McQuillian made some very good saves during the game and was unfortunate not to get something on the ball to stop one or two of the goals:
The tough wintry conditions may have slowed the pace of the game in the second half: However second year students Rachel Shaw and Anna McCullagh can be pleased with their Under 17 debut as they both added to the Wilson's tally:
Girl's football in Wilson's at all levels has been building over the last two seasons and this experience was shown in the final score with the team notching up seven goals and only conceding once
Nonetheless Beaufort can take consolation that a foundation has been put in place to build on for the future:
